Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 29, 2009 12:46 pm We are building our house on stumps and we have to option to put our heating in the floor or the roof? Which would be better? I have spoke to some people who had the experience of living in a house which had this in the roof and another which was in the floor. I have heard good and bad things about both. Roof ducted the heat factor is good but you can't dry you washing as fast. Floor ducted also the heat factor is good but the vents can get in the way of furniture, and young children using the vents as mail boxes Has anyone had the experience of both, what did you think? Re: Gas Ducted Heating 2May 29, 2009 12:51 pm Hot air rises Great way to utilise the heat on low settings. How ever remembering how I was as a kid growing up with vents on the floor, not a chance we'd put them in. And as you mentioned it'll restrict your furniture placements. ---------------------------------------- Building the PD Lisbon 24 http://www.porterdavis.com.au/#homeviewer/lisbon/24 Blog of our progress. http://lisbon24.blogspot.com/ Homeone build thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28665 Re: Gas Ducted Heating 3May 29, 2009 12:58 pm Although I haven't had the ceiling ones yet (they will be in this house) I would probably put them in the floor. As you said its great for drying clothes and they are good to stand on to warm up your feet when its cold Ours are mostly in corners and places where furniture wouldn't go anyways so thats not a major issue but as for the kids I'm not sure but my mum never said we put stuff in them and apparantly we were pretty naughty around the house Re: Gas Ducted Heating 4May 29, 2009 3:38 pm Given the choice, I would put them in the floor. Our last rental had them. We moved in when DS was 14 months old. He very rarely, if EVER 'posted' things. He liked driving his cars over the grate though *shudders* (horrible sound!). It was GREAT for my washing!! The vents were pretty well placed. In front of all the floor/ceiling windows (you normally wouldn't put furniture there). There was one in the kitchen at the return IYKWIM, which I would avoid in my own house. Consider one for the bathroom too. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Southern Highlands, NSW. Re: Gas Ducted Heating 5May 29, 2009 3:44 pm I think that if you're careful with your placement, having the ducts on the floor will be fine. We plan to have ours on the floor. Re: Gas Ducted Heating 6May 29, 2009 3:53 pm Generally ducts should go in front of the windows - whether they be through the roof or floor. This creates a wall of heat between the rest of the house and the areas where the most heat is lost - the windows. This is also usually the last place people put furniture. I've had both and I believe that floor ducts are noticeably better. My house has 8.5 ft ceilings and if I put my hand up near the ceiling after they've been on I can feel the difference in heat - its quite obvious. The floor is the area where heat if most effective and with roof vents thats usually the coldest area. Another problems with an in roof system is that in bathrooms heating ducts are virtually useless if you have an exhaust fan on - the heat will come out the vent and go straight into the ceiling fan without heating the room at all - at least with an in floor system there is some circulation before any heat is lost throught the exhaust fan. Re: Gas Ducted Heating 7Jun 17, 2009 6:30 pm i preferred floor ducts and if you have a higher ceiling, install a ceiling fan, during winter turn on the ceiling fan on lowest speed...this helps to push the heat downward..... Re: Gas Ducted Heating 8Jun 17, 2009 7:59 pm Bam I think that if you're careful with your placement, having the ducts on the floor will be fine. We plan to have ours on the floor. I sit on them when Im cold That's my 13YO's only complaint about this house. He loved sitting on the heating duct in his room in our old place. As he says, it's a bit hard to sit on the ceiling.... If you're on a slab, you don't get a choice. We find the ceiling vents work really well anyway. As for drying washing...we put an extra point in our laundry, which has plenty of space for clothes airers. Everything dries super-fast under the duct.
