Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 13, 2009 1:55 am Hi all, i've been going thru this whole insulation business day by day as we build ( with a lot of good advice from the HO regulars) & based on thier good advice i've used a number of different types of insulations as well as anti-con. i've used some "poly" batts that i found wonderful to handle with no itch like "f/glass" which due to different situations i have also used in some areas. However on building site Monday a tradie asked me had i checked fire rating on "poly" seeing we are to have tile fire flu going thru the ceiling, i had raised this matter previously with one manufaturer, who gave me to understand that modern "poly" batts were manufactured with some "fire retardent" and there was little difference in fire ratings - the tradie then grabbed 2 equal sections of "poly" & "f/glass" insulation and put a touch to both - hmmmm result was a bit unnerving - although personally i don't like "F/glass" i will certainly be putting this in the immeadiate surounds of the flu, & it also made me wonder about sparks from bushfires getting thru eves into the ceiling? i wonder if any other people ( particular in country) have taken fire rating into account as well as r ratings, & if there is "only a little difference" in the official fire rating u might like to carefully do a few experiements of ur own - the outcome did surprise me! has anyone had other similar experiences? cheers t&v Re: Insulation R ratings & Fire Rating 2Jun 08, 2009 11:25 pm We are in roofs all day for air conditioning.
Re: Insulation R ratings & Fire Rating 3Jun 08, 2009 11:55 pm Hi Boatman - yep this whole fire thing with insulation has me totally spooked to the point of now putting 2 smoke detecters in ceiling cavity with alarm wired down to living area! if ur working in a new house with aircon, do the fire test on a bit of material urself - amazed me!! cheers tony 10 years ago was a different software than we use now. it has had a lot of changes over the past years.
