Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 01, 2009 6:57 pm Hi guys We're getting 78mm thick wall frames. When enquired about insulation limitations on the thickness of the wall frames I was told that they normally use Insualbreak 65 as insulation on external walls. Now, I've just been sent a sample and it's only 5mm thick. Will this be sufficient? :S Somehow I think not... Is anyone familiar with steel frame wall thickness and its impact on insulation? By the way, most of the other steel frame quotes were based on 92mm thick wall frames. Chris So do you think I should be fine with fitting R3 and R2 "inside" 78mm frames? :S Re: steel wall frame thickness and insulation 6May 01, 2009 8:46 pm All insulation batts seem to come with the recommendation against squashing. If you wanted to stick to the spec, the thickest batts you could fit would be 78mm. I've seen the polysterene boards avertised somewhere, 75mm thick, with R value of 2 (I think), which would much more effective. There're also 78mm thick rock wool batts, but both poly boards and these batts are rather expensive. So it all depends on how much you want to spend. So, cannot imagine why you cannot at least fit R2 in your case. Can't be 100% sure about R3 coz my R3 batts are for the ceiling. Chris Our architect has recommended R1.5 for the external walls and R3 for the ceiling. Hope it will be ok Does R2 provide 25% more insulation than R1.5? Re: steel wall frame thickness and insulation 9May 01, 2009 9:13 pm Being a two storey house do you think we should go R2 upstairs but stick with R1.5 downstairs? Would it make much difference? Would it make much difference? Errr, pass. I didn't apply any science in my decision. One of the other builders I went out to quote has R3 in the ceiling as standard. When I decided on W&M, I figured that insulation upgrade was money well spent (probably save many times that in years to come).
