Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Apr 09, 2009 9:57 am Hi Half the house is typical pitched roofline but the extension which houses a bedroom and dining room has a flat roof. A further extension may be added with a further bedroom and family room. Is it possible to install ducted evap cooling given the flat roof? Re: Evaporative ducted cooling + flat roof 2Apr 15, 2009 3:08 pm My understanding is that where the house has the pitched roof you can run duct work and vents, but where the roof is flat you will need to install something in the wall. Re: Evaporative ducted cooling + flat roof 4Apr 16, 2009 6:34 pm HI thanks for getting back to me. Where does the ducting tube go given it wont fit into the ceiling cavity? Re: Evaporative ducted cooling + flat roof 5Apr 16, 2009 9:46 pm You can use wall registers (wide outlets) if the ceiling is higher in the extension than in the rest of the home. If not the only other option would be to get a sheet metal company to make an external duct cover up. Basically a big box made from colourbond or similar to cover the duct so it is not exposed. The duct for evaps can be upto around 400mm depending on how it is designed so a cover can be very bulky, also it wont look too flash. If you cant see it from the ground this does not matter though. Apart from that there is not much else you can do, only other option is a side discharge evap unit mounted on the wall. This is not ideal as you will have all the air coming from one big outlet basically, this is kind of what is used in those demountable buildings that schools and businesses use. Not ideal for a domestic situation and wont look too flash. A quick example is a coolbreeze s100 is an example, other brands do them too but cant remember the models. Re: Evaporative ducted cooling + flat roof 6Apr 17, 2009 12:56 pm We use metal cowls all the time. They look bulky but can get the ducting across a flat roof section. They usually add about $1,000 to the price of a quote though. There may be council requirements as well if your neighbours can easily see it. Re: Evaporative ducted cooling + flat roof 7Dec 24, 2009 8:17 am I'm in the same boat though even tougher. Is it possible to install the evap unit on a low/flat roof? My roof has 2 sections, a higher 8 degree pitch slope/skillion and a lower 3 degree slope/skillion (looks flat and is hidden behind a parapet). I'd like to install an evap cooler on the lower pitch because it'll be hidden from view - is this possible? The roof space height of the low pitch slope behind the parapet is roughly 350mm (lowest point) to 650mm (highest point). If I can't do this, I may have to consider my options for bolting on an AC to my gas heating. Re: Evaporative ducted cooling + flat roof 8Mar 29, 2024 4:02 pm Hi There I'm designing and upgrade to my dog boarding kennels which will have a pitched roof without a ceiling cavity . Being kennels the ducting can be run inside as it doesn't matter if its unsightly Anyone know if this is possible? thank you I would suggest you simply go and talk to council about your proposal, most councils are getting onboard with ancillary dwellings.
