Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Apr 06, 2009 10:37 am Hi all, I'm curious about the cost of ducted heating, vs. a standard wall heater. The house & land package I'm looking at includes fully ducted heating (no cooling unfortunately). However, I'm not a fan of ducted heating (I have it in my current rental, and it costs a fortune to run, so I just don't turn it on). I asked instead to swap the ducted heating with a standard wall unit, figuring it'll save quite a bit of money - it saved me around $850. I thought it would be more than that. So, I need some advice on how much it'd cost to install a ducted heating system in a 3 bedroom house, and the cost of installing a standard wall heater. That way I can tell if the builder is just inflating the costs, and I'll then work out which route to go (keeping the ducted heating vs swapping it with a wall heater). Thanks for any advice! Re: Cost of ducted heating vs wall heater 2Apr 06, 2009 11:43 am My builder gave me a credit of $1880 for the ducted heater - I'm getting a different one installed through another company 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Get a five star unit with zoning, and your gas should not come to more than 250/300 for a 1/4 for a 30square house for example. Re: Cost of ducted heating vs wall heater 4Apr 06, 2009 1:07 pm So saving $1800, then adding $1000 to install a wall heater... doesn't sound that bad, so he wasn't ripping me off too much (compared to other builders anyway). But you're saying it might be worth completely removing all heating, and just doing it yourself? I can't work out what to do with cooling.... so maybe removing all heating, and putting that saved $1800 aside to put towards cooling & heating - maybe install two split systems... but I'm not sure if that'd be enough for a 3 bedroom house (approx 21sqm) (I have the smallest budget ever!). Oh, and in my rental - over winter, the ducted heating was costing me $200 *A MONTH*. I had one hell of a bill that quarter.... I ended up climbing into the roof cavity and turning the damn thing completely off. This is where my hatred for ducted heating comes from. Re: Cost of ducted heating vs wall heater 6Apr 06, 2009 1:15 pm Hmmm thanks for that.... it's a tough call then. Basically, I have a small budget, and to be honest, I wouldn't even turn the heating on anyway. I'm more looking towards the future - if I plan to rent it out, or sell later... what would get the greatest return. (i.e. wall heater vs ducted heating) I *do* need an air conditioner though, but I'll leave that for another post later! It looks like the builder wasn't fibbing with the prices then, in terms of the price difference between ducted heating and a gas wall furnace. So far, I'm leaning towards the gas wall furnace option - I'd have it installed into the main living area. (In that case, I'll get ducted evaporative cooling installed later on). 0 1341 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Hi everyone Question about Brevis gas heating undergound - was recently installed by previous owners (<1 year old) but live in a relatively large house - 4 bdr - and only… 0 1574 Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 7935 |
