Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Apr 05, 2009 8:37 pm We've just been given a building estimate from M3tricon and we're going through it to see what we can get done ourselves... They have listed a "...Daikin ducted inverter air con including 3 phase upgrade for $13,990" Is this a good price, are there likely to be hidden charges? Looking through some of the other threads, it seems the Daikin is one of the better systems, but is there a better alternative? Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 2Apr 05, 2009 8:57 pm How many ducts and zones? Also how big is the unit? How many kw? Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 3Apr 05, 2009 9:07 pm To give you a comparison I am not getting my builder to install a heater and I am getting ducted heating and refrigerated cooling through the same vents: 9 ducts, 2 zones and 9.5kw lennox system and its a 5.3 star system - both heater and cooler are lennox and its costing me $12.5k. They haven't given us the exact system details- what i wrote in previous post is all we know. Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 5Apr 05, 2009 9:31 pm Ok, well this is another comparison for you then. We are building a 31sq (living only) home and putting in a 24kwt ActronAir ESP Plus unit http://www.actronair.com.au/espplus with 8 Zones and 13 Outlets, installed for $17,350 in a VERY rural area. Depending on what size unit they have quoted you for will depend on the cost, so I can't say whether that price you have given sounds right or not, sorry, although it does sound like a small unit which would proberly just do you size house. Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 6Apr 05, 2009 10:02 pm Hey 1sthomebuilder, thats about the average for a builders charge for ducted a/c inclusion, the house im building is up around 28 square and c0ral wanted the same price for the daikin 3phase 14kw unit i did some research and you can buy the same unit through a place like airconditioning direct and have it installed by their guys for around 10k if you want the hassle of doing this i changed builders and they included the same unit for 10k installed so for me there was no decision Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Some builders prefer you to use the A/C company that they are comfortable with. A/C Contractors that don't hold up progress or destroy the house like cut roof trusses to make things fit. Sometimes they pass on the exact quoted price that they have been given to the end user, some builders will put a margin on for the organising and supervising. Then there are other builders who (if you don't buy from them) will not let the other A/C contractor on site until the home is finished. To bad if you want to hide refrigeration, electrical or box in a duct from upstairs to downstairs. Check it out carefully. But maybe a few extra bucks to keep an eye on things is worth it. Cheers Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 10May 20, 2009 10:16 am You can get the specs they've quoted you on and get alternative quotes from other aircon companies - then you might be able to negotiate for a lower price with your builder. Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 11May 20, 2009 11:12 am We were quite suprised when we got our quote we're getting the Brivis ICE add-on, now we're yet to receive the model numbers but it's a 15KW single phase unit with two zones for $8115. I've had independent quotes for complete systems for $11k-$13k, our house is only 25sq. Ben Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 12May 20, 2009 4:00 pm i decided to go with the builder after I got external quotes which were much higher. I managed to find out from one of the subbies I rang that it would only cost me an extra $400 to upgrade my 5 star heater to the 5.5 star heater (he20i to he30i) and the higher model has about %30 better airflow capacity - which is crucial for the add-on cooling, since the faster the air moves over the coil, the better it will cool. $400 extra well spent! (overall the air-con with upgraded heater was $10400).... Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 13May 24, 2009 1:11 am Best to shop around, but ultimately find a contractor you feel comfortable with that will do a good job.
Re: Should we get builder to do A/C or find someone else? 14May 25, 2009 9:47 pm before you get your builder to do it, ask for a plan, if they can not give you one get it done after! Just because their advertsing says you will get something don't think you will! If I had my time over again I would not get it installed by MY builder. They would have to pay me to put it in. I also would not be installing a Daikin.
