Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 16, 2009 9:48 pm Hi Guys, we are thinking of using a portable aircon in our new home for our sons room as we don not feel it requires a $1200 split as we will be needing to spend our dollars elsewhere. I was wondering if anyone else has used one and if so what brand..........any pros and cons would be appreciated.......Thanks in advance. Re: Has anyone used a portable air conditioner?? Thoughts? 2Mar 16, 2009 10:01 pm hey there, we have a split system in our lounge at the moment, and with a new baby, this xmas, we decided to buy a 2nd hand portable air con for the nursery - just for those scorcher nights because the nursery faces west and the lounge room one barely cools down one metre (well nearly!!)
anyways, we bought one 2nd hand on ebay (I think 1.5hp) and it was fantastic (we paid about $320). IT was in perfect condition (you would have thought it was new), it was soooo powerful, did the nursery and the hallway easy, couldn't have been happier. Not as noisy as I thought it would be (look for the db scale - over 50db (I think) is getting noiser) but we think it was a great idea in hindsight. We had to hook up the window and all that mucking around, but def glad we did. We can now sell this b4 next summer for probably similar dollars, when we move to our new home with duct air con. That was the real clincher for us, we can just re-sell it later. (and yes it was really really cool) very powerful! Annie A thankful person is a happy person. Thoughts? 6Mar 16, 2009 11:54 pm i got one 2 summers ago, my current place dosnt have a/c. i got a Dimplex its 12000btu, works great on any hot day, but only for one room, it can be a pain sometimes tho as you have to run a duct outside the window, and depending on the window you will have to "mod" the window bracket the comes with it so it will seal, nothing some thin wood/plastic wont fix.
Andrew edit : and they are noisy, my room is a normal size, i have 2 pc's in here (5 monitors) and it'll keep the room temp 10-15 degress lower than outside. Re: Has anyone used a portable air conditioner?? Thoughts? 7Mar 17, 2009 8:07 am Thanks Andrew, I think modifying the window is a given but I am hoping its not to tricky. I was thinking of the noise factor also.......but we have one of those in the wall old units thats pretty noisy and my DS still sleeps with that in his head no worries........hopefully like AT suggested we can find one below the 50db and that should help a bit.
Andrew, 5 monitors you wouldn't need heating during winter. Re: Has anyone used a portable air conditioner?? Thoughts? 8Mar 18, 2009 10:25 am a 12000btu will do one room (ie: Double bedroom) without issue. Don't try and make it cool a large living area of a house as it won't work too well.
I have a dimplex poratble rated at 12000 btu bought off ebay 2 summers ago for half of reatil and it's still running fine. At the end of Summer make sure you drain the water tank before strorage and you shouldn't have a problem. Tip - a piece a cardboard cut to size to fit the gap in the window works well.
