Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 09, 2007 10:09 am Hello!
We would like to get air conditioning in our new home and we are thinking of ducted air con with 2 or 3 vents into rooms. We have had a quote for supply and installation for around $6000 (a friend is doing it). What are the pros and cons of ducted air con? Is this the way to go or is it best just to get a split system? Thanks! Re: Ducted Air Con 2Mar 09, 2007 10:18 am We are getting the ducted air put into our new house. The advantages over the split systems for us were that we can cool the whole house rather than needing a split system for the living areas then one for the main bedroom etc...they add up in cost quickly. Most systems are zoned so you dont need to be cooling areas you dont want to. Seems a good price too! We are paying about $8k for 10 points.
I think you would propably pay more to get two good quality split systems supplied and installed! Re: Ducted Air Con 3Mar 09, 2007 10:43 am We are also getting ducted A/C installed in our house after handover.
The main reason for this was we don't like the look of those big chunky machines on the walls. And although splits do quite a good job (my parents have it) we like the idea of being able to have the the air come out in different parts of the house. Ours will be an add-on system but will be zoned to cool either the living areass or the bedrooms only. We didn't think it was necessary to cool the whole house at one time (because we've made good use of our north facing block) so we don't think the house will heat up that bad to warrant cooling the whole house in one go. Plus the heating sytem we are getting can heat the whole house but can't cool the whole house in one go. So, that was kind of our only choice. But it worked out well because it's what we wanted. I've gotten a few quotes and it will cost us anywhere between 3-5k. [sneakersss] ducted air conditioning 4Mar 13, 2007 10:41 am Hi,
Ducted air-conditioning is a fantastic way of cooling the whole home. Usually the decision comes down to a few key factors: * Your lifestyle and the way you live/move around the home * The initial supply and installation cost * The running costs! If you like spending all your time in the one room/area and are prepared to sleep in there on those really hot nights, then a wall hung split system is perfect. However if your constantly moving around the house, and like to sleep in your bedroom at night ducted a/c is the way to go. Naturally a ducted system costs more to buy and install which is a factor. But perhaps the most important factor in my opinion is the running costs. I have seen people install ducted a/c and after running it for a month realize they can't afford it, after that only turning it on for an hour or two a day. The whole idea is to be comfortable! That means having a system that does what you want, at a price you can initially afford and then continue to afford. Do some homework on running costs and then weigh up the options. Good luck!
