Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 06, 2009 12:47 pm Hi all,
sorry if this is a repeat topic, I couldnt seem to find my answer anywhere else. My partner and I are looking at buying a recently built (as in 18 months old) house with a colorbond roof (sloped, not flat). Unfortunately, the previous owner didnt put in ducted aircon/heating, so it only has a split system on the wall. Considering it gets pretty warm in summer, we're definately looking at getting a place with ducts. (we're in SA) I just wanted to know, how hard is it to get ducted put into a colorbond place? Is it really a matter of ripping up the roof, putting it in and then nailing it back down? Is it usually pretty cost-prohibitive? I know I need some more details on roof cavity and stuff, but I'm looking for ball park cost-benefit, as if its going to be more trouble than its worth we'll leave it be. I've been scouring the internet but not having much luck, except people saying they're putting in ducted DURING a build, which obviously isnt applicable for us, as the house was built. Cheers Re: aircon install in existing colorbond roof 2Mar 06, 2009 12:56 pm you shouldnt have much of a problem. It is a little harder but not impossible.
The reason why you install unit and ducts during build is that it is cheaper as access and working conditions are easier thus cheaper to install at this time. To get the unit into the roof cavity it will most likely be done by removing(unscrewing) around 2 sheets and placing the unit in the roof cavity. To work out price you need to know what size house you have and what system you want. A typical system are the Brivis gas heater with add on cooling. An average price is around $10k but this could easily be more or less depending size of house and units. In Vic most people usually dimension there house to be able to heat 100% of house at once. With refridg cooling most people only do about 50% using zoning. Otherwise the cost to run are too expensive. Re: aircon install in existing colorbond roof 3Mar 08, 2009 10:02 pm We put ducting in small roofs all the time. Sometimes the highest part of the roof is only 600mm and the ceilings are already up. It's a hard job but we just get in there and do it. You should have no problems at all. Re: aircon install in existing colorbond roof 4Mar 11, 2009 8:42 pm hey, dont ya hate when people dont do the hard work for you
its shouldnt be too hard we do it all the time (im a sparky and our company installs air-cons too) and alot are put in existing houses, even two story homes. im not sure what theyl do where you are, but here in perth they cut the hole in the ceiling for the "return air" (sucks air back to the unit to circulate through the house again) this is usualy big enough to put the unit through so the tradies should just slip it up into the roof fairly easily without having to remover your colourbond sheets this also depending on other factors like how big your roof cavity is etc.... hope it helps.. Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10105 You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 17583 The unit normally clips into a metal plate screwed to the wall, either plate is not flush, or unit not hooked in and could be hanging from the pipes partly, either might… 2 15767 |
