Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 04, 2009 1:19 am I just had someone from Eureka Insulation come to my place and do some measurements so he could give me a quote for installing insulation.
I told the guy that I wanted reflective insulation installed under the rafters and he didn't seem to understand what I was talking about. He said that RFL doesn't have enough of an R-rating to improve the insulation, and recommended that I just get a whirlybird since it'd cost less. I got into a bit of a discussion with him, telling him about what I wanted, how low-emissivity material would work in reducing heat, and how a whirlybird could not remove enough of the heat in the roof area and cooling the ceiling would not be relevant in reducing the heat in the living areas. He seemed to get my point but I don't think he was convinced about what I was asking him to do. My place is a 2-story townhouse which already has glasswool insulation in the ceiling cavity. I discovered there's actually a huge pile of leftover insulation that the builders left in there, so I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the excessive heat I'm experiencing in my upstairs rooms! Anyway, it's been almost a week now and I haven't heard back from them, so I'm wondering if they're even interested in getting my business at all! Can anyone recommend a company or a tradesman in Sydney that has experience in retrofitting reflective insulation in the ceiling cavity, and actually understands the purpose of getting RFL? I'd rather deal with someone who can provide knowledgeable advice on this matter instead of getting a sales dude who only knows about whirlybirds and "high R number good, low R number bad". (Btw, DIY might be good for some, but it's not for me. I'd rather have someone else working in that roof area!) Thanks, everyone! Re: Installers in SYD who "get" reflective insulation 2May 28, 2009 10:37 pm I know you've said no DIY but addinga reflective layer of sarking is actually quite easy. Just buy a roll from bunnings for $70 odd and another $40 for a staple gun and start stapling! I've recently finished doing this in my garage and am about to start on the house. After a while the "thunk" of the staples going in becomes quite theraputic and you can forget you're stuck in your own attic space. btw - I didn't find an installer I really felt was passionate about insulation when I looked for batts for my place so ended up doing it myself.
