Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Feb 08, 2007 5:26 pm Hi all,
We bought a house in Canberra and now we find that plastic wrapping around the ducting ( heating only ) is coming apart. I am guessing the ducting is about 15+ years old. The insulation material seems to be intact. I had a builder tell me that we should get it repaired or replaced. I called around a couple of places and get conflicting advice. Some say as long as the insulation is intact all is well, others says if the plastic is gone you need to replace the whole thing. I find it difficult to understand. Does the plastic play such a major role or is it there purely to hold the insultation material in place?. If the later is the case, could i not just wrap plastic around it myself and get some more years of usage ? Your comments, advice or past experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance Robert flexible duct insulation 2Feb 21, 2007 7:06 am This is a common on older ducts. The outer sleeve deteriorates and leaves the insulation exposed. In reality the outer sleeve is there to hold the insulation in place. But today the outer sleeve has fire retardant, UV stabilizers and other materials to make it last longer and make it comply with AS4254.
The choice is yours to make, as long as the insulation is in place and wrapped well around all ducts then you could leave it. Consider also that new ducting today has increased insulation ratings R0.6, R1.0 etc and has to comply to Australian Standards. 15 years ago there were no standards and people could make whatever they wanted.
