Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 16, 2008 5:55 pm Hi,
Will be looking to get ducted refridgerated cooling installed mid next year, once my home is built. I was wondering if anyone knew an aproximate cost for this. It will be for about 17 squares of living, and about 8 - 9 outlets. Also would it be better to have 3 phase power installed by the builder or is it not needed for a home this size. Any help would be greatly apreciated. Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 2Nov 16, 2008 5:59 pm In NSW for a 26 sq house my builder charges about $11k (for a 43 sq double storey the charge is about $2k more - can't figure that one out!) After 4 years - we're in! Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 5Nov 16, 2008 9:39 pm leonda Ours was $11K for a 43sq house. Best money l ever spent, we had a 2 days in a row over 30 degrees and within 1/2 hour the entire house was cool! I agree entirely! Best $12K I ever spent! Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 6Nov 16, 2008 9:52 pm I agree i will be getting it regardless. I want to be able to come home and get cool quickly.
Still $12k for a 21 sq home seems high to me. I am sick of people saying "why don't you get evaporative cooling, it's cheaper". I don't want evaporative cooling and I don't care if its cheaper. I have quit smoking, so I can afford to pay for refridgerated. I used to justify everything the same when I quit Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 9Nov 16, 2008 10:01 pm Mine (DW) is still going on them!
... Easy to justify lots more! Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 10Nov 18, 2008 1:44 am Cleishy I agree i will be getting it regardless. I want to be able to come home and get cool quickly. I have quit smoking, so I can afford to pay for refridgerated. I'm going through the same process now and had 4 quotes for a double story townhouse of about 18sq all around the $10k mark. All quoted a Brivis GDH with the addon Ice unit around 13-15kw (single phase) and about the same number of points as yourself. I thought it was pricey but if thats the price of avoiding evap so be it Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 11Nov 18, 2008 6:50 am Evaporative cooling also requires the windows to be open, and if you get hayfever like I do you don't want that.
Our quote for a 35sq house from the builder was $17k for a 4-star unit on single phase. Our quote on a 6-star single-phase unit from an independent source while we were deciding whether or not to include the heating/cooling in our house was only $13k. We're doing it after we move in as well. --Mike Everything I know, I learned from SBS. I know its a bit late had our a/c installed upgrade to me30xa heater 3 phase power and 18kw brivis add-on 2 zones and 14 outlets 10K through Henley Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 13Apr 07, 2009 2:24 pm You can run an evaporative cooler for the price of running 3 lightbulbs, or more importantly, dramatically reduce the average of 7 metric tons CO2 per home per year that the average home produces from electrical energy consumption alone. A refrigerated airconditioner could produce up to 5 tons (extra) on its own (based on an 18KW unit running for 2 hours a day for 6 months... very conservative estimate) Im just as guilty as the next person for producing the above carbon emissions, which is why im installing evap cooling (and i live in Queensland) Try this web site to get some idea of what we burn, its quite scary. http://www.carbonify.com/carbon-calculator.htm and heres another interesting site http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/howmuch.html Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 14Apr 07, 2009 2:55 pm Just did some calcs to show the hidden costs of refrigerated cooling. 1 kWh costs approx 20c for 1 hour of use (x by 18 kW) therefore it costs $7.20 for 2 hours a day of use for 6 months a year that could be almost $1300. (ouch) In contrast, a 400 watt evaporative cooler costs $30 a year to run under the same conditions. Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 15Apr 07, 2009 3:11 pm hi stu, remember that if you have a fairly effecient house, although the refridgerated air cond is on it doesnt have to be running all the time. on average refrdige air conds work only 50-60 percent of the time. Also you calculation is wrong and 18kw unit uses around 6kwatts of energy per hour. You need to look and input energy instead of output. The house i currently live in now has refrdige and we used it heaps this year. Probably worked out that we paid an extra 150-200 extra for the 1/4 on you elec bill. Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 16Apr 07, 2009 4:54 pm I hear what your saying, however many houses in Queensland are not very efficient. I once lived in an old Queenslander, and my aircon was on for anything from 4-6 hours a day (it was an oven) Im still researching the kWh issue but I found this which also mentions that a ducted aircon uses very high kW (15 kW in their case): See: http://home.howstuffworks.com/question272.htm I guess your power bill actually says a lot, but im more concerned with the 4 million (estimated) refrigerated airconditioners in Australia that are causing huge carbon emissions that could be replaced by something that causes only 1/10th of the carbon emitted. I just wanted to put it out there that we all need to start thinking differently about these things...Me included. Re: Ducted Refridgerated Installation Cost 17Apr 07, 2009 5:14 pm You are correct about the kW borg, I just found this: Quote: Modern units run on approximately 1 to 3 ratio i.e., to produce 3 kW of cooling this will use 1 kW of electricity as a result, you can divide my running cost by 1/3 But then if you run your aircon for 6 hours you should keep the cost as is I need to replace the worn mohair seal on my sliding window, but I can't get access to the end to slide the old one out & push the new one in. I could probably rip the old… 0 5202 Thanks Simon, I guess I'm no concerned with the volume of the noise rather that dead and hollow sound and feel that is associated with floating floors. But I'm not sure… 3 6163 |
