Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 09, 2024 9:00 am : Hi I have a cathedral ceiling in a cottage we rent as an Airbnb there is a large bath and shower in this space . We have had the cottage for 3 years now Just lately in some very cold days and nights condensation forms and drips from the ceiling only in one area -this hasn’t happened the last winters The ceiling consists of (from the inside to out ) painted lining boards then R 3.5 poly batts (250mm thick stapled to frame we made under the original roof frame to accomodate the insulation)then small gap then sisilation (double sided foil ) then a colourbond tin roof . I opened the roof and cut the sisilation and found moisture esp on top of the poly insulation and some evidence of running moisture that was obviously finding its way through the ceiling and the lining boards . It is not a lot of water . I’m assuming the water vapour from inside is reaching a dew point and forming water Droplets when it hits the sisilation and the metal battens . Question is if I reduce the penetration of the vapour with say foilboards and plaster or just plaster will it stop this .Can foilbords just be glued to existing wooden tongue and groove ceiling then plaster over the top of the foilboard ? Or is there an easier / better way to reduce this condensation ? Thanks Ross Re: Cathedral ceiling condensation 2Jul 10, 2024 6:11 am I once specialized in roof repairs such as this and this sounds like a complex issue therefore I suggest seeking the advice of a professional so they can attend site to investigate. Roof leaks often don’t follow the occams razor principle and your repairs may exacerbate the issue. Additionally, cutting the sisalation increases the likelihood of condensation to the underside of the sheets if left exposed Our 6m high Cathedral ceiling has 0 insulation, just plaster, wrap and tiles as far as I can tell. Wife likes the exposed beams, I hate the $600 per month heating bill,… 0 24052 what's the rationale on this? In my mind, the risk weepholes mitigate isn't solved by acrylic render. 9 42089 Many thanks for your reply. Yes I am concerned with the work done. I have another problem with my contractor and I hope this next investigation and review with the… 2 19616 |
