I've been told that it adds volume to our design - the design already has floor-to-ceiling north-facing windows. This window essentially curves around and extends the north-facing one. The west-facing window will be floor-to-ceiling as well. Re: West facing window in Canberra 2Nov 22, 2021 3:22 pm antler Has anyone had experience with a west-facing window in the ACT? Just be sure that you have the suitably sized eaves, and something to shade the early morning easterly summer sun, which can heat your house at the start of the day. In our custom design, we have no west facing windows at all, but still get a bit of westerly sun in our southern windows because our orientation is not exactly north (15° east actually). We have had to strategically plant a tree to help out. Also, we have a northern wall of glass too. That's really useful to know. We'll remove the west-facing window. It was going to be un-shaded (and without any curtins!). The energy assessor has recommended some form of eaves between the (multi-level) north-facing wall of glass. Absolutely: if you have floor to ceiling windows on a multi-story property, you will definitely want awnings or outriggers over the ground floor windows. Is this a custom build being designed by an architect or building designer? If so, their drafting software should be able to show you exactly how the sun will enter your property at any day and time during the year. This will give you a visual indication if the solar-passive aspects of your build are correct. I've been doing my own research using solar-path modelling. Removing that west-facing window has been quite helpful in getting the EER up (despite the increase in size of the house). It might be a bit darker in the mornings but the light is still light, so you should be getting it.
