Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 30, 2021 12:34 pm Hi guys, Can someone let me know if slab insulation - underneath and edge insulation is worthwhile for a waffle pod slab? My builder is unsure if the juice is worth the squeeze. Any guidance/experience would be appreciated. IMHO insulation is pretty cheap compared to the return, so I would always err on the side of saying yes. However, given that most of a waffle slab has a form of insulation under it, perhaps it's not necessary to put any more insulation underneath. That said, there is still some concrete (the "beams") touching bare earth, so some might argue otherwise. I would still install edge insulation, especially as you are installing hydronic heating. No point putting all that energy into heating the slab and then having it "leak" out the side. Re: Hydronic heating - slab insulation 4Apr 12, 2021 1:45 pm I haven't used homeone much in the last few years, but have read some horror stories about huge bills for in-slab hydronic heating. The culprits usually seem to be poorly insulated slabs, inexperienced installers, a lack of zoning. Personally, I wouldn't do in-slab in Australia. The thermal mass of the slab is extremely high. Meaning the system has extremely slow reaction times. Taking up to a day to fully heat up or cool down. There's also more chance of heat loss from the slab into the ground. I'd be more inclined to do in-screed hydronic heating - what you often see on Grand Designs. Where insulating boards are installed above the slab, hydronic tubes are then laid, covered by a topping screed. This system has a medium thermal mass, improving reaction times. It's also better insulated from the ground. Re: Hydronic heating - slab insulation 5Apr 12, 2021 7:41 pm Buy European made heaters. Neighbour has had hydronic for 4 years and only worked for 2 of those intermittently. Nobody knew how to fix it except the importer (came from a rather large belligerent country to our north). Does anyone have a suggestion for a good hydronic in slab heating speacialist who may be able to help me with an existing system and wether or not it may need a seperator… 0 4870 Currently renovating, and our main lounge is 5m x 10m, with a cathedral roof peaking at 6.5m high.
