Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 18, 2020 4:16 pm Hi all, first post here. Thanks in advance for your advice. My husband and I are about to embark on a new build in Greater North Western Sydney (Hawkesbury district). We are owner building, and working our way through the myriad of decisions that comes along with that. I'm hoping to get some advice on insulation recommendations, there seems to be a lot to consider here, and opinions seem varied depending on the climate. The house has a timber frame, hardwood clad, steel roof construction, with considerations already made towards aspect - eave widths and window heights have been adjusted accordingly, and we have lots of lovely North facing glazing. Basically, the layout of the house is pretty sound (we think) for thermal comfort. We have also specified double glazed aluminium windows. As far as what is already specified in our Nathers report, at a minimum we must have External Walls- Anti-glare foil with bulk R4 (this seems like its quite a high R rating for this application?) Ceiling - Bulk R4 Roof - R1.8 Most of the house is slab on ground, but there is a small section of bearers + joists where bulk R2.5 insulation is specified. Additionally, we are considering slab insulation, but we are unsure if this is overkill/counterproductive in our climate - I'm getting conflicting information from different sources. Wondering if anyone has some experience to share in similar circumstances to ours. Potentially looking at internal wall insulation as well. Not sure if this would help much thermally, but also might be a good addition for acoustics. Having a bit of a bounce around the web, looking at all the different types of insulation available (especially for the ceiling), I'm wondering what I should be considering when comparing the different products available (aside from price of course) Do products with the same R value perform differently? Is installation much the same? Curious to know what your thoughts are on the above, any advice relating to different insulation products, and any other considerations we might make in relation to keeping our new home thermally stable! Re: New build, Insulation Options 2Mar 01, 2021 10:13 am Have you considered the solar heat gain from your extensive north facing glazing? It can be as high as 1 kW/m2 imagine that pumping into your home on a hot day. There are a couple of solutions, low-E glass is one your builder and window supplier will suggest, but if it doesn't affect the aesthetics, then I recommend shading your glazing externally - if the heat can't get in you wont have the problem. a problem. Low-E has its own considerations not the least of which is cost, and it does not perform as well as a shade.
