For a double storey house, we're going with a concrete tiled roof (black tiles) and already have R3.0 insulation going in. I've summarised a little from what I've read on the forum but have a few questions. Also, thoughts on whether it is the way to go.
* It should stop any leaks from a cracked tile dripping onto the plaster/insulation, but will also hide a leak so it's difficult to detect and find. * With a single bathroom exhaust fan, do we need some form of external venting? And does a whirlybird satisfy that requirement? * We've been quoted $2000 - for the Sydney area, is this a cost worthwhile or is the insulating effect never really going to pay for itself? * Will one or two additional whirlybirds do the same thing and hence do we need to get it? People who build one house often ignore sarking, people who build again make it a priority. Clarendon charged us about $1.6k for sarking. I consider it a must have. I hate leaky roofs, that would drive me crazy. And it helps reflect some heat. The R3 will ensure most of it doesn't get past the ceiling but I'm also wondering about whirlybirds. I've been in my roof cavity and it's mighty hot with slate grey terra cota tiles, if I built again I would definitely put whirlybirds in, post build I've got too many other things to do (like get air-con). Re: Sarking - Need a summary 45Dec 12, 2009 11:14 pm Whirly birds don't do anything apart from attract lightening. http://forums.envirotalk.com.au/Whirlyb ... t8445.html Any pipe with a Chinamen cap - ceramic is best, will do. Instead of using one big one, use multiple small ones like chimney pots. If the roofed area has eaves, sarking is optional. So, that's the rule for garage too. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ...
