Yes there is reverse cycle is when the compressor effectively runs backwards and the air conditioner turns into a heater. With add on you have two seperate units. One to heat and one to cool. The benifit of this is that you can use GAS to heat and electricity to cool. This way you get a better choice of capacities to choose from. For example since gas is cheap you may want to get a 30kwatt heater for your house. However for cooling you only want to do half a house (use zoning) during the day to keep cost down so you only need 15 or 18kwatt system for example. in single phase size is often limited. 30kwatt GAS heater is much easier to install that 30kwatt electric heater.
