Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jan 15, 2011 8:59 pm Has anybody had any problems with the Brivis contour evaporative cooling system blowing mosquitos and bugs through the vents and on to your floors? We are having no end of trouble at the moment. I am vaccuming twice a day just to keep up with the dead bugs on the floor. Have contacted the installer who blamed it on the high humidity we have been experiencing in VIC at the moment. They also refused to come and look to see if the system had any installation problems. We also contacted Brivis directly and they seemed to spin us the same story. After spending over $4000 on this unit just under a year ago, and paying extra for an extended warranty, we are less than impressed and wondering if anyone else is experiencing any similar problems. Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 2Jan 16, 2011 9:29 am Yes having the same problem for weeks now. I do not have a Brivis unit though. I have been given advice from placing bleach in the water tank to spraying outlet vents from inside the house with Bagon or similar. At this stage no luck with both. My air conditioner friend hopefully will come this week to check it out. The problem is worse at night. Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 3Jan 16, 2011 9:33 am Welcome to H1 to both of you. Oh what a terrible problem, I have never heard of this before. Maybe Byza you could tell us what your air conditioner friends says as I am sure there will be others who would like to know. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 4Jan 16, 2011 9:38 am Yes I will post a response as soon as he has been. Had the same problem last year but not as bad. I have cleaned out the tank and cleaned the batts in the last 3 weeks but still no difference. Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 5Jan 16, 2011 10:21 am Just off to Bunnings to get some flywire to place over the batts/pads as I have just read on another forum that someone tried that with success. I am not the handyman but i will give it a try. Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 6Jan 16, 2011 10:23 am Great let us know how it goes. Good Luck. Ours also is worse of an evening. Would be interested to see how the fly wire goes. I did read on another forum about it, but was worried by the statement that it could overheat the unit? Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 8Jan 16, 2011 8:27 pm Evaporative coolers draw in high volumes of air and it is possible to draw in bugs / smoke etc through the filter pads. If you can get on your roof (safely) each of the four sides of the cooler will have a filter pad attached (typically) to the panel and can be taken off. I have seen fly wire used successfully in the past but bear in mind it will affect performance slightly (very slight I'd say - impeding airflow as they have been designed to free draw through the panel and filter only) and if the bugs accumulate on this wire it will adversely affect your cooling performance also - keep an eye on it to make sure there is as much free surface area on the panels. Good luck You get what you pay for! Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 9Jan 16, 2011 8:39 pm We have had Evap Cooling in this house for approx 10 years and I have never had a problem with bugs coming thru the system UNTIL this year. i am inclined to believe your friend the humidity this year has been really high as we have never had this problem before and I like you are constantly sweeping/vac up the bugs, had it on today and not a bug in sight so hopefully problem gone with the humidity. This is our third summer with it. Seems very odd... sounds like something isn't sealed properly. Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 11Jan 23, 2011 9:31 am Just an update after putting the flywire on last weekend. It seems to have worked because of the flywire or is it because no high humidity this week, not sure. Anyway we are a lot happier now and no bugs. Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 12Jan 23, 2011 10:29 am That's great Byza, thanks for the update, it could help others in the same situation. Glad that you are 'bug free' Simple solution to an annoying problem. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 13Jan 31, 2011 9:55 am Could be a good time to check and clean filters if you're getting on the roof at the same time. Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 14Oct 20, 2011 8:59 pm Does anyone have instructions on how to get the pads out to clean them - on a Brivis Contour? I have tried pulling the top off but can't work out how to remove the pads Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 15Oct 31, 2011 9:12 am We had this problem last summer, so this last weekend (before we use it this summer) we took the 4 sides off and washed them down and wiped what we could see inside - it was plenty dusty and a few cobwebs but no sign of any bugs in the filters(?). We were getting small dead bugs (aphid sized - like the sort that swarm over lawn areas in summer) coming through the vents and with one of the vents situated above the dinner table it was a bit gross seeing all the dead bugs on the table. I ended up closing that vent completely last summer and putting a towel inside the vent to collect any insects before they fell out (the louvres are closed but there are small gaps between) but I would rather be able to have the vent open and even try some insect mesh inside the vent. The other vents are less concerning but still a bit gross. My thought was that the bugs were being caught in spider webs (on the exterior of the unit) and then being sucked into it and through the ducts. I did a quick google search about cleaning evaporative units, but apart from a host of service providers who will come and clean it for you, couldn't find anything to use as a guide to DIY so we just did what we could see. P.S Ours is a Bonaire unit - 3 years old. I have no idea how often it should be cleaned and if anything needs replacing. Second Time 'Round Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 16Nov 03, 2011 7:48 pm (hey, 1st time poster, 15 years experience HVAC installation/service) I can see how the Evap might suck in bugs and spit em out via the vents (although i've never seen it) Anything really small that flies past it has the chance to be sucked in, from dust to bugs. Flywire cover the pads would be a winner in my opinion, and i can't imgaine it being that hard or expensive to do. IMO cleaning a EVAP depends on the weather. The drier it's been the more chance that dust has been sucked into it setteled in the bottom of it, ad that over a few dry years that we have had and i'd service a Evap this year. Re: Brivis Evaporative Cooling blowing insects through vents 17Nov 10, 2022 12:44 pm A bit of an old thread, but still relevant. We just turned our Brivis cooler (new unit installed last year) on for the first time in months as the weather warmed up after what seemed like months of rain in Melbourne. After the rain, there is lots of standing water around and there have been swarms of mozzies up against the windows every night this week. Hundreds of dead mozzies came out of the vents and into the house when I turned the cooler on for the first time. I later realised I'd accidentally turned the cooler on in "fan only" mode - which doesn't wet the cooling pads before the fan starts. Since I turned the water pump on, it seems the water has flushed the mozzies off the pads. No more are coming out now. Hopefully it stays that way! retail its around double the price of a similar sized actron/dakin system from memory, They are excellent systems though.
