Browse Forums What's New 1 Feb 26, 2009 3:36 pm Here are my ideas for houses...I've been incorporating them into my various The Sims properties for a few years now.
1. A suspended mezzanine type kitchen. You enter into the house as normal, and you go into the lounge room. Then there are some open stairs on both sides of the room up to the kitchen which is like the 2nd storey to the lounge. You can see the kitchen from the lounge as it's all open, the balcony/mezzanine bit there, and there's a dining area just below the kitchen. It's like the dining area is "sunken" off the higher kitchen level, with the living area on the normal ground floor level. 2. Garden courtyards off the bathroom/ensuite. Particularly with double french doors. 3. Similar to the suspended kitchen idea, it's a suspended master bedroom. You go down this passageway and come into the huge study/library room with all built in bookshelves, and on each side again of the room, up to the master bedroom which is on the mezzanine area above...it's not completely exposed because it's only overlooking the study, which isn't exactly a bustling room in most houses. (this area can also be in a separate "wing" of the house) 4. Again similar, sort of, is a master bedroom with an ensuite that is up some stairs, but it'd be a half flight of stairs up to the ensuite, and the ensuite would be open (again as a sort of mezzanine), but set high enough so when you're in the bedroom you can't see anything unless someone is standing right at the edge of that ensuite about to come down the steps. Also, there are concertina style bifolding doors to close if you need some privacy (such as toilet things. I don't get how people can have a full ensuite in their bedroom with NO doors!) The end. For now. HEH. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Some possibly odd ideas from me. 2Feb 26, 2009 6:50 pm Hehehe, you have been haveing fun with your computer game, Grace
I agree with you re doorless ensuites, I know they've been around for a few years now but I'm definetly still not converted! Your ideas sound interesting, the kitchen raised a few steps above the dining room might not be practical for carrying hot foods, liquids etc from one to the other though Re: Some possibly odd ideas from me. 3Feb 26, 2009 8:20 pm Not sure about other points but i have seen display with garden/courtyards off the bathroom/ensuite, and they use double sliding door. They put up a very high bamboo fence to stop neighbour seeing through the ensuite area, with a few plants, very nice.. It’s quite delightful. Lol. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Some possibly odd ideas from me. 6Feb 27, 2009 1:33 pm HEHEH! It surely would be!
In my ideal world, people don’t need to cook at home much, and any hot food carriage is the responsibility of the robot maid that slides down the staircase effortlessly to bring you your meal. I have seen this done in a haybale house a couple of years ago, not so much over looking a study, but the main lounge and entrance area of the house. The staircase was on the right of the entrance way and you couldn't see anything in the bedroom as it was set back enough from the top of the stairs to be hidden. Looked good and had a very open and cosy feel to the house, but without doors it didn't feel very private like an enclosed bedroom does. Re: Some possibly odd ideas from me. 10Feb 27, 2009 6:02 pm joles I don't know how practical your mezzanine kitchen would be, but damn it would be sensational for food fights! ROTFL!! Cause even though you can't actually see the bedroom from the lower floor area, you can still hear everything. I wouldn't like that. But having the study and bedroom areas in a slightly separate "wing" (like a short passageway going in one direction and then the lounge and other areas go in the other direction), you've got a bit of privacy unless someone is actually in the study, and as this floorplan is really for people like my girlfriend and I (just a couple with no kids), that's not really an issue anyway. If you did have kids however, it'd still be ok, as both rooms are classed as "quiet rooms" Another thing I'd definitely incorporate into any floorplan I ever designed (which isn't especially weird or modern or new, but I don't really ever see it for some reason that is unknown to me), is a master bedroom (which has an ensuite off it) that has a really short (like 2 steps or so) hallway after you walk through the door, before opening up into the main square or whatever part of the room. So it's almost as if you've got a tiny small rectangular type entrance way and then the main, larger square bedroom. And also, you could use another wall in that small rectangular area to put the ensuite door, so you're not wasting any wall space in the main bedroom area!! Right now for instance, we've got 4 walls in our bedroom. One is taken up entirely by mirrored robes, which is nice. Another is mostly taken up with the balcony sliding glass doors, which is also nice. Another is not overly useful because it's taken up partially with the entrance door and the ensuite door. That only leaves the bed wall. So in my ideal bedroom proposed plan, you would get a whole extra wall. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Some possibly odd ideas from me. 12Mar 16, 2009 6:45 pm A great way to avoid doors taking up wall space is to use 'cavity sliders'. The Door is a sliding door that slides into the wall and dissappears altogether. Most internal house doors are always open, so having this facility makes sense and there are new prorietry slider systems that are not super expensive.
