Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 23, 2019 3:30 pm What are some side paths options? We were originally going to have stepping stones surrounded by pebbles, now having second thoughts. We have heard of issues like weeds growing out and sometimes pebbles getting stuck under the lawn mower. Should both sides be the same? One option is to grass the less used side and concrete the more used side. Looking for options. Re: Side paths 2Dec 23, 2019 6:45 pm The very, very, very first thing that you have to do is consider your soil type. Have you done this? The second thing is slope. The third thing is drainage issues.....if any. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper. On one side will have a step due to slope. That’s the side we would use more regularly. Haven’t thought about drainage issue. We never had drainage issues before we did the KDRB though. We had grass on one side and a mix of concrete and pavers on the other. Re: Side paths 4Dec 23, 2019 8:24 pm One We are in Sydney, clay based. On one side will have a step due to slope. I would be focusing on the soil report and moistute levels at this stage. Sydney weather has been dry and hot, no rainfall so far this month, a very hot and dry November and the annual 2019 rainfall looking to be nearly 30% less than average. These conditions bring special challenges when building, particularly on kdr sites and future climatic trends should be considered. Re the clay base...is it reactive soil and are you extending the former building envelope? I assume that you will have a slab. A good slab engineer will specify site soil rehydration before commencement but he will know the conditions and have local experience. Also, is there now a maximum impervious area now applicable to your site that may influence your landscaping choices? All the best for the build.. 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: Side paths 5Jan 14, 2020 5:54 am What saveH2O says is bang on. Priority 1 especially with reactive soil is protect your slab. A path that slopes away from the house with good drainage should be your number 1 focus. Forget previous drainage, this is a new build and new challenges. They also don’t make slabs like they use to - assume you have waffle pods. I’d take an average side yard with good drainage over a coffee table book cover design any day of the week. With the help of an imagination, Pinterest and hydraulic knowledge there is no reason why you can’t have both.
