Hi there,
I have recently bought a house and it has a massive Sago Palm (I believe) (cycad revoluta) in the back garden.
It is a very attractive tree, but is getting out of control and dominating all else so I want to cut back the fronds to encourage newer but less dominating growth and also remove the cone - see below.
Please see the attached photos, it is male and is growing a cone at the moment. This cone is coming to fruition and it will explode into pollen soon - the pollen is toxic to humans I have read and is also doubly toxic to me as I get hay fever
The cone in the photo is nearly 2 feet tall (!!!)
Questions
- Can I just remove the cone cleanly at the base before it reaches fruition and dispose of it without causing damage to the plant?
- The leaves are stretching over the garden and are also massive. I've seen some videos where people actually cut back all the leaves to the trunk and then new growth is encouraged, is this recommended?
There is very little information on plants this old, large or of this scale. Most are tiny.
Thank you very much in advance for your valuable advice
