Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Small garden bed - Tropical Fence Screening 2Mar 07, 2020 1:04 pm I had milar issue. A small space, wanting to create tropical area whilst also screening out neighbours. I used a clumping bamboo. There are many on the market. Make sure they're of the clumping (non-invasive variety) or you'll have bamboo growing out of control. One very popular variety is slender weavers (Bambusa textilis var. gracilis) has thin, tall and straight culms that form an attractive clump. Fast growing, it's ideal if you want a privacy screen or hedge. I bought Gold Stripe which is ideal for very narrow spaces. I panted it along fence line in 30cm wide space. Another one I bought which requires more space as it has a lot of growth at lower end is Alphonse Karr. Go online and check out clumping (non-invasive) varieties. They grow very quickly and easy to maintain. While screening out neighbours and giving tropical feel to space. Hope this helps. How far from the fence do you plant the clumping bamboos? Does this type of bamboo: Bambusa textilis and Gold Stripe, shed their leaves a lot? I'm just worried that the neighbour might complain if there's lots of leaves droppings.. Another question added to above Did you install root barrier even though non invasive I’ve read many websites that say to do that for narrow areas anyway? And if you did not how long has yours been in ground and do you have any issues? I think that’s a great idea. It would look nice on both sides and would refresh and modernise your outlook 🙂 7 2576 ![]() Can Sir Walter Lawn be de-thatched during April / May in Mackay Qld?
