I'd llike some advice on how to prune these gardenia's back as they are getting too tall. I read a few web pages that said to trim them between leaf pairs but that wouldn't seem to allow us to take much off as the leaves are above quite tall woody stem sections.. We'd like to keep them below the window and below the railing of the deck.

Don't be too concerned where you cut. Cut it on a slant though. Sharp pruners are recommended. If you want the plant to be thicker, cut top growth and pinch prune side growth. Good time is now.
