Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 01, 2019 7:53 pm Hi , I’m in need of advice , I have recently had a landscaper out to figure out what to do with my boring front yard. Their suggestion was to build a front retaining wall along the whole front to level the top. It’s going to be 1m high. My problem is what type of material to use for it and what will go with my house colours. One suggestion was sandstone and the other was a block wall charcoal colour. I have attached pictures of what materials the landscaper suggesting and picture of my house. Would love some advice and if possible any other materials out there , or pictures. I'm not entirely sure why you would need to go to the expense of building a retaining wall, when you could just put a garden in the exisiting lawn? However, given that you might want to proceed with the landscaper's recommendation, either of those colours will work with your house, as your house has both colours in its front elevation. Note, however, that sandstone will be more expensive than retaining blocks. So, which colour to choose? I guess it depends whether you want the more subtle traditional look of stone, or the more modern high-key look of charcoal/black. Re: Front yard Landscaping 3Jul 02, 2019 12:20 pm I'm with arcadelt. You have the height of that ridge to plant out three or four hedge species that would work very well to create a height staged colour/foliage display. Use a simple brick edge at the bottom and top sections to define the garden bed and keep the lawn on the verge and front yard separated. Give your wallet a break and scope the landscaper to define the garden bed edging and clear / breakup / the soil, maybe even install irrigation to the new garden bed.
