I remember hearing from someone re pruning an English Box hedge that you should prune a bit and prune often. Just wondering if this is still the case?
For a hedge that I want to limit to about 12 inches, do I just let it grow while it gets to that height or is it best to continually prune to shape? There are some bits growing out horizontally that are outside where I want - do I leave this until the growing season is finished or do I do that now?

Definitely prune often. You need to keep in mind that as the hedge matures, the trunk and branches get woody and lack any decent leaf growth. Another reason to prune often is to increase the density of leaf.
