Hi all.
I built a new home about 4 years ago now (Perth, WA). As part of land package, they throw in some lawn and simple retic for the front yard. I paid a bit extra to get my backyard done (lawn and retic). The grass I chose was Empire Zoysia. I had dreamt of having an amazing lawn, and being out there every weekend working in my garden.
The problem is, I was young and strapped for cash, and very naive.
The sand they laid the lawn on top of is complete rubbish. White and sandy, with chunks of limestone and large rocks all through it. No matter how much I fertilise or water, as soon as it gets a bit hot, it just dies. Same goes for any small trees that I planted, and the vege patch.
I've read the pinned posts on this forum and it's now obvious that this is due to my sand. I needed to replace this with some real soil/compost but I didn't know this at the time, nor would I have had the money to do that 4 years ago.
I had purchased a bunch of topsoil and sand2soil types of product, also things like Wettasoil, but I believe my garden is a lost cause and beyond rescuing I have run out of energy and willpower and have neglected the garden for the last couple of years. The sight of my front and back garden now make me sick!
I now have a young son so the idea has popped into my head again to re-do my garden. I have also saved up a bit of money as I know this will get expensive. My questions are, what options do I have? How do I fix this? I assume I will need to tear up my lawn and throw it away (it's in bad condition, pretty much dead and dry/yellow at the moment). Then I'll need to get someone to take away a certain amount of my sandy/crap sand, then replace it with some real soil. Then lay some new lawn on top of that? I have looked around at some landscaping companies and none seem to mention this type of rescue; I don't know how to tackle this. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thankyou very much!
