Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 07, 2008 10:55 am Hi all,
I did a search and didn't find much (though it was a quick search). Need some advice (Fu manchu ) on what plants to put near our pool We have a pool out the front, salt water. It has a small garden bed along the brick wall. At the moment there is a bird of paradise thats doing well and some small shrubby things that are still green, surprisingly. We used to have roses in between the shrubs, but since the OH got sick of cleaning petals out of the pool, they were removed. I tried Kangaroo paw, they died Just wondering what i can put in there, that doesn't require a lot of water (it's not on retic and i forget to water it) and isn't going to drop heaps of debris. I'm probably asking alot here thanks all. Re: What plants for near a pool 2Sep 08, 2008 6:30 pm Is it reinforced concrete or fibreglass?
yes it does make a difference Also how much space do you have? Are we talking 50cm wide beds or 2 meters to the fence? Is it sunny? What access do you have into this area? What direction does it face? By that I mean does it face west or south west etc. Are you located on the coastal plain or in the hills or perhapes Gosnells or swan valley, it also makes a difference Re: What plants for near a pool 4Sep 08, 2008 8:12 pm It's important to take these things into consideration.
The areas mentioned each have different soil types and will help determine what you can grow and what you may need to do to improve the soil. Coastal will most likely be limestone caprock or just sand dune sand ie Scarbrough or Marmion or Mullaloo, rocko etc. The aspect will matter because that will tell me if it gets the hot summer easterlies or if it is subject to the daily 25 knot seabreezes in summer as well as 55 knot storms in winter. Narrow beds will mean different choices again for the area. does that help Re: What plants for near a pool 5Sep 08, 2008 10:30 pm ok here we go
We are at the bottom of kalamunda. Garden bed is only 80cm wide. Its 2.5m long but there is other shrubs in there The garden bed is right next to the wall. The pool is 1.2m from the garden bed Good access to this area I can tell you that it doesn't get afternoon sun. Pool is fibreglass. I think that is North, the way i put it on the pic. But i am seriously bad with directions And yes it gets very blowy where i am. Feels like a cyclone sometimes! i think i answered them all Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: What plants for near a pool 6Sep 09, 2008 12:54 am hmmm...
well 80cm isn't much space for a start Agave' and yucca will look great small but agave' will engulf that area as they grow Yucca no good near the fibreglass pool. Reinforced concrete is cool. So ideas are purple fountain grass ( a fav of mine) that will grow and fast, the flowers won't be enough of a hassel to worry about. Dianella varities would be worth a go. Cotton wood hibiscus as well (won't hassle the pool) just will drop big leaves for a month or so as the season cools after summer (doesn't lose all leaves ) Vibernum Tinus would work well but at late winter lots of flowers for a week or two (when the flowers stop and start to drop) but you wouldn't be swimming in it anyway then unless you are exceptionally keen on swimming Cordyline red sensation combined with Leucaphyta brownii (cushion bush) would look really good. red and silver foliage would look fantastic. The osteos we were talking about in that other thread would be good to. They will be flowering but they are not messy. Lush and green for summer and bright colour when it is cold and the pool isn't in use. If you are out that way, pop into Zanthorea nursery for some other ideas They really know their stuff there Nice place for a cuppa too while you are there Here's how West Aussies can make sand into soil Checkout The Forever Project Before starting your landscape attend a FREE Great Gardens workshop Re: What plants for near a pool 7Sep 09, 2008 8:38 am wow thanks fu lots of plants to go google now.
your right about not swimming in it. I only go in the pool in december january and february. it has to be at least 35 degrees for me to get in!! I might go out to that nursery this weekend Thanks Fu much appreciated Re: What plants for near a pool 8Sep 09, 2008 11:11 am Philotheca and erimophila varieties to will be good as well. Murraya could be a great option for you. It creates a great tall screening hedge but doesn't drop fruit like lily pilly. The flowers smell divine. 2 7962 Our standard double-glazed window is tested to achieve, Rw 34, and can be glazed to suit Rw 39. The price is good too... 3 1447 Hi everyone, Looking for some advise.
