I am planning to plant a few small plants next to my driveway and pebble around the plants. To prevent weeds from growing I am planning on putting a layer of roadbase on top of the soil and weed mat. I'm just unsure as to how I put the plants in - should I leave them in their plant buckets or should I take them out and make a hole through the weedmat and roadbase so that the roots are touching the soil underneath? Or is there any other method you'd recommend? If the plants are small, then just cut an appropriately sized cross in the weed mat and slip that over the plant after you have planted it. I don't think you need to use the road base on the weed mat and can just use the pebbles as the mulch directly over the mat and around the plant, but that’s up to you.
