was looking at getting a japanese maple for a bit of colour and display at the front and thinking along the lines of a few chinese elms but not sure what to do down the back and sides also dont wany anything that will start growing over into the neighbours yard Re: boundary trees n shrubs 2Sep 02, 2008 7:56 am What about something like the Aussie lilly pilly - they grow pretty much straight up but bushy like a cylinder - could be good for a screen (and really nice pink flowers) After 4 years - we're in! Wind break 3Sep 03, 2008 7:26 pm And Lilly Pilly growes F A S T !! Young leaves are a deep red colur & mature leaves a deep green. Really are a nice looking plant. Perfect for hedges & wind breaks.
But ........ Make sure you leave room for the fully grown tree. Not like my nutty neighbours who planted right on the boundry! I told them to plant a bit further into their property so my horse couldn't reach the trees. But no, got yelled at for my advise. So ..... 2 years down the track, my horse was trimming their hedge. Now they yell at me ... "Tell your horse to stop eating my trees!" Too bad I don't speak horse.! Timbacare - Save Your Furniture! I grew a row of them along my back fence to block out a 2 story house and they look great. Though I did have to stop my 2 year old daughter from trying to eat the fruit.
Other lovely screening plants are Acacias and Grevilleas. Some Grevilleas to consider would be Firesprite (3-5m tall), Ivanhoe (3m) and Hookeriana (4-5m). Not only do they look great, they should grow in your soil, attract birds and look great cut in a vase. Re: boundary trees n shrubs 6Sep 04, 2008 8:51 pm eating the fruit off the lilly pillys will do no harm at all. In fact jam can be made from them.
we eat them if a lilly pilly has good enough fruit. "Bush apples" they can be known as. wouldn't be overly concerned but then again not a good move to let her get in the habit of eating random stuff in the garden I suppose, so good move A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
