Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 08, 2017 12:16 pm Hi Everyone, Nov 2016 less than a year ago, I laid Zoysia in the front and Kikuyu in the back from the same supplier. Located in Melb east. Same soil preparation and same watering to get both front and back going. The Zoysia took a little to get going but has been lovely throughout winter. The Kikuyu on the other hand grew really fast and I was mowing throughout Summer. However, I have a real problem now. Here I was controlling bindii throughout Winter when I didn't know I had Winter Grass growing throughout. I just thought it was Kikuyu. But in the past few weeks, I noticed the grass seeding in clumps and only through a bit of research yesterday did I realise it wasn't Kikuyu. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I've found a number of pages on this site that talks about controlling Winter Grass pre and post seeding. I will hit my turf with Embargo April to May next year to stop it growing next Winter. However, what should I do now so late, nearly mid-Oct? I think it's too late for 'post' control? I've read everything from: a) "just let it grow and die" - Will it just die? Is it choking the Kikuyu? b) pulling it all out by hand (which you can see in the photos there is lots) c) Amgro Winter Grass killer which isn't suitable for Kikuyu but in this page (viewtopic.php?p=467486) it's mentioned Endothal is ok for Kikuyu and Amgro don't know what they're talking about? But is it too late in Oct to use anyway to be effective? As mentioned above, it's new grass from last Nov. When I mowed the grass, I could see distinct patches of Winter Grass. In fact, I saw one patch of Winter Grass in the middle (arrow in pictures) that had a distinct outline of the shape of a rolled turf (it's the direction I laid it). Could the roll on turf have had Winter Grass seeds in it already? I'm just so shocked how much Winter Grass could suddenly grow in the first Winter of laid turf? I wish I put the Zoysia in the back too even though it was twice the price. I'm all ears, thanks heaps for reading and advice!!! Its really quite easy to pull out, grab the clump and pull it back and forth and it comes right out. Much easier than other weeds/types of unwanted grass. Re: Winter Grass Outbreak in Kikuyu - What should I do mid-O 3Nov 28, 2017 7:42 pm Don't water the back lawn as much and the kikuyu should out compete the winter grass over the next 3-4 months. Kikuyu is a summer grass so would have been fairly dormant through the winter, but eventually it will dominate any winter grass. It also needs much less water than winter grasses. Cat_dunc, it's completely taken over now, I'm looking into using a pre-emergent herbicide next Apr/May. Bashworth, I haven't been watering it much recently thinking exactly the same as you.
