Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 29, 2017 12:39 pm Hello all, After some advice. I have a concrete pool which has a moss rock edge and waterfall. I need to do some repairs as the waterfall leaks where tree roots have penetrated and cracked the mortar. So, I am wanting to know what mortar mix would be the best for the repair. I have read something that is M4 classification would be best. Do I use lime or a plasticisier and acrylic modifier? And what type of sand would be best? I have read that brickies sand reacts with salt and chlorine? I am located in Perth. Thanks in advance. Re: Mortar mix 2Aug 31, 2017 4:53 pm Hi jaredlia. When mixing mortar for around a pool , be it bullnose header course over a concrete pool or moss rock beams and waterfalls, you need a waterproofing agent. GP cement at 3 sand to one cement with a waterproofing agent such as silasec and some bondcrete to give a better bond is the go. Follow the directions with the silasec and the bondcrete and you can't go wrong. Is there any colour in the existing mortar? Sometimes black oxide is mixed in with the mortar when building mossrock water falls to give a dark contrast , which if this is the case you may need to do small test batch to get the colour right. Hope this helps. Shaun Re: Mortar mix 3Aug 31, 2017 4:56 pm Sorry, forgot to add that brickies sand is fine as long as you use the waterproofing agent. Re: Mortar mix 5Sep 05, 2017 1:42 pm Hi Jared. Yes General purpose cream will do the job or if you want lime use brickies lite. Not essential to use lime but it can make it slightly easier to work with. The tricky part with cream mud is getting a good colour match. Do a small batch and if it looks to light add more sand to darken. Compensate with additional bondcrete to ensure the mix doesn't loose strength. It's important to remember cream mortar will dry a shade or two lighter so if it's lighter when it's wet it will definitely look different when dry. Good luck. there is only 20% difference in concrete strength between 20 mpa and 25 mpa, so check with your engineer first if it fits his calculation tolerances.
