I am not very good with names but pictures speak volumes to me. Do you know of a good website that has pictures of all these varieties you are talking of. You are a wealth of knowledge for all things green so far. Nice to know, when they start looking brown I will be calling on your expertise. Most know much more than me and I am always learning... always, i must feed my brain horticultural info to remain happy
I have learnt from and worked with plenty of people you guys see in the media all the time. and many more that form the brainstrust behind the sceens:) I didn't come up with some the plants you posted up to do. I can't get over the expertise this forum has on tap! there are people on here that blow my mind with their experience and knowledge in so many areas. Commodorenut, Michelle, Yak Chat, Dukekamaya the list is a whopper! so many more too keep the ideas coming Re: Corner block "dead side" ideas? 27Aug 26, 2008 1:56 pm Fu Manchu Here in WA that is not the case. We just don't have the soils in the lower west for them too. WA growers still produce these in massive numbers and they are very popular in retail nurseries each summer when they are in full flower. They don't grow aggressively here like over east. Agapanthus has naturalised around Albany ... so I guess the west isn't completely immune. Saddest thing is they most likely result from people illegally dumping garden rubbish in the bush, and I'm sure even in WA they are a bugger to permanently remove (hence the attraction as a 'can't kill it' garden plant). Love the Leucophyta brownii suggestion, interesting colour and texture, great garden plant. How about some Scaevola for a bit of colour? "african daisies" courtesy of Helyn's garden. These are the flowers already, in late winter; as spring comes on they will be more prolific, right thru summer. Little orange flowers at the front are Gazanias, also very hardy, once established need zero maitenance even in low rainfall areas like mine. Council has roundabouts full of them. Re: Corner block "dead side" ideas? 29Aug 26, 2008 3:41 pm Helyn, I love you!!
I know nothing about gardening and when I go to the nursery to ask advice they start talking and my eyes start rolling in the back of my head. I've got an idea for the front of the new house and I need a hardy little orang flower and this looks perfect!!! Please tell me that they handle lots of sun and can manage if there is a bit of rain at times. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Corner block "dead side" ideas? 30Aug 26, 2008 3:50 pm Joles, gazanias come in varieties of orange and yellow, extremely hardy, grow in full sun and survive very dry weather, very easy to propogate from offshoots, I live in an area of 7 inches rainfall a year and never water them.
Not sure how they go if it is too wet and cold, not haveing that problem here. Re: Corner block "dead side" ideas? 31Aug 26, 2008 3:59 pm Helyn "african daisies" courtesy of Helyn's garden. Basically, if you live in South-Eastern Australia and want an easy to grow, no care, drought-proof garden ... buy Kate Blood's environmental weed handbook and plant everything that is listed in there. We have spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to eradicate South American grasses from pasture and native grassland... but chances are you can buy them at your local Bunnings. http://www.gregsindigenouslandscapes.com.au/Weeds4Sale.htm Re: Corner block "dead side" ideas? 34Aug 26, 2008 7:41 pm Quote: but chances are you can buy them at your local Bunnings. And in the case of gazanias, our council plants them by the truckload on all the roundabouts!! (they do look good though; mass of bright yellow and orange flowers) Re: Corner block "dead side" ideas? 35Aug 26, 2008 10:27 pm I didn't know that Aggies were a hassel round Albany, so there you go. Totally different soil to the lower west land division and climate there, so soil type must be a contributing factor? good find. and yes there are better options
Saw the osteos posted and they are awesome. Get fast growth and loads of colour. how about Arctotis as a fairly non invasive option. Big orange daisy flowers too, like gazania. this topic really got me thinking today, came up with lots of other ideas. xerophytic landscaping is great. Not all would be suitable for the original thread question but hopefully it will spur the imaginations of many others. Some of the plants found in the links have kept me busy reading too What a cool topic Re: Corner block "dead side" ideas? 36Aug 26, 2008 11:16 pm Fu Manchu Lots of great ideas in this list! Just a note on Running Postman (Kennedia Prostrata). As the name suggests, it is a prostrate groundcover ... however you can grow it up and over objects. I trained a Kennedia and Hardenbergia up and around an old tree stump - they twined together and it worked really well (although I think there were a lot more red flowers than purple!). Don't get impatient with the Kennedia when it goes through a 'lanky' stage ... they eventually fill out. We are planning to grow Kennedia rubicunda (Dusky Coral Pea) over our side fence, will be interesting to see how long it takes to get to the top. I hope you will be pleased with the rate of growth on that one.
