Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 22, 2008 10:52 am My DM has just given me a mature Ponytail Palm.
It's in a 30 cm pot and it needs repotting it's about as tall as me and the bulb at the bottom is about 25 cm.....I'm after any recommendations on potting mix I know it's kinda related to the cactus family but the google searches are a bit open-ended on whether to use a cactus mix or a sandy-loamy mix......anybody got any tips. Also what size pot should I go for and what shape would suit it's root system. I thinking 60 cm diameter, but I understand they have a deep root system. Thanks in advance...here's a picky off the net of one I'll take a photo on the weekend, mines much nicer....no knobbly bits and much neater. They all get great results and to be honest I have never known them to be grown in anything special.
You can't kill the bloody things with a brick. The widest point of the plant will generally be the base at soil level. It tapers in from there pretty much so pick a pot a little wider and think of it as a ballast to stop the thing falling over in a storm. They tolerate being root bound very well too. As far as mixes go, well nationally sold brands to pick would be the Osmocote premium in the blue and white bag, the amgrow mixes are good, the debco "potmate" or "terracotta and tub" and "tub and terracotta" by amgrow too. A mix that is around $10 and has the premium grade ticks will set you straight. Have terracotta pot about 20 cm wider and its a fair amount deeper than the current one....left over from a Hoya climbing experiment that didn't take....suspect I had the Hoya too exposed. Pony Tail has been in a plastic one for many years suspect in won't make too much of a difference.
