Any new growth in a cold area could get damaged. I would stick to the growing period and make sure you don't do it on a hot sunny day as the leaves can burn. Re: How often to clip a new hedge 6Dec 01, 2016 8:43 am shamuscassar.sc I would stick to the growing period So do you think the early May or mid August prune should be skipped? I assume May as that is leading into Winter. However, that would mean I only prune 3 times a year - which doesn't sound much more regularly than an established hedge (as I assume I'd be doing that 2 times a year). Sorry for the questions I'm just keen to get it right as I've spent a fair amount of my time (and money) getting it to this point. I'll happily hire someone to trim but there's a trust factor there too especially during the establishing phase - I don't want to mess that up and set me back a period. Re: How often to clip a new hedge 7Dec 01, 2016 3:25 pm It's really a matter of judgement. The rule with developing hedges is little but frequent pruning. That might have you pruning quite a number of times over the growing season until you develop the hedge. Let some new growth get relatively established then tip prune again. Once you get to the desired height, prune the top level and leave the sides. This will encourage it to thicken up further. Re: How often to clip a new hedge 8Dec 16, 2016 1:51 pm Tip pruning will help the hedge grow bushier. I find it helps to have a string line or wall to measure the height you want. This might need to be adjusted at different growing times. Small and frequent is better than large every now and again. 9 19180 In Victoria you cannot put a caveat on arising from a domestic building contract. 65 105620 Hi All, We are building in Maitland and considering between Vision Homes or New Edge Homes (part of Masterton).
