Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Advice needed about back garden! 3Aug 29, 2016 9:29 pm Craigasaurus I would lay some top soil down and get turf. Grass from seed is pretty crap imo. Turf in my area is about $4sm. That's cheap! I'll need to price up turf, our wintergreen lawn was $11sm for the front but that was included in our land package. Re: Advice needed about back garden! 4Aug 29, 2016 10:21 pm Hi There Not a bad little back yard shouldn't be to hard on the wallet to landscape. Unfortunately sand isn't a very good base soil for most grasses. Like previously said I would put down 100mm of good organic turf underlay then lay turf. Don't do grass from seeds its absolutely crap takes time will never flourish your best bet is to completely turf everywhere remove all weeds first. I would suggest if you want a good strong hardy grass and want to limit weeds go buffalo grass depending on your area. Expect to pay $10 per metre squared well worth it in my opinion. I would also to if you have the money run a small concrete path around the edge of your house helps divert water away from the slab and also is good to walk on when it rains. Have fun I did all my landscaping myself, saved heaps of money and it looks very good much better than any spec builders landscaping which is crap soil, cheap turf a $10 1980s style stake letterbox a $10 tree and a clothesline. Don't expect anything fancy its all very bottom of the barrel stuff installed by questionable tradies who could struggle to use a level and do weird and wonderful things sometimes depending if you lucky or not. Thanks for your advice! It's pretty daunting as I just don't know where to start. Our sand is pretty black underneath I'm thinking that's soil. Is topsoil expensive? I've no clue. Our wintergreen grass out the front was laid straight on top of sand.... Could we lay turf without the topsoil, also what's the best thing to kill weeds that won't affect my dog? Sorry lots of questions.. Thanks Re: Advice needed about back garden! 6Aug 31, 2016 10:08 pm I m unfamiliar with wintergreen maybe its adaptable to sand some grasses ar eok at least you have brown soil underneath although it would be still sandy. Topsoil isn't much usually price it up from a few landscapers or look for ads in gumtree sometime people give it away although it may have building crap mixed in it. Personally I would spend the money and do the job properly once and once only. Its up to you 99 per cent of project builders don't it all depends on the look and finish you want. As for weeds Ive found roundup to be the best its probably not dog friends may have to tie him up on a short chain for a while. I like to pull most weeds if they come out and only spray the hard ones.
