Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 01, 2008 11:27 am Hi there,
Our garden beds hug the external house walls and footings. The soil is almost constantly damp/wet and I fear that this is creating a drainage problem for the house. I was thinking of digging out the soil from the garden beds and replacing with crushed stone but I'm not 100% sure that this will help the problem. Does anyone know if there is anything that can be done to help the situation? Re: Garden beds right next to house footings 2Aug 01, 2008 11:36 am what sort of slab have you got?
You may be able to lay down aggy pipe under the garden beds and hook it up to the storm water pipes - it needs to be at slab height or just below I think. This would allow you to keep your garden beds if you like them. Building in manor lakes 2008 Re: Garden beds right next to house footings 4Aug 02, 2008 10:14 am Steve, I completely understand. I personally would never put a garden bed right up next to a house but unfortunately this is what I've purchased. Is there anything that you can recommend to remedy the problem?
Razzle, the house is on stumps so there is no slab. I had a look for ag pipes online. I don't quite understand how they work - does the dampness seep into the top of the pipe somehow and end up inside the pipe? Re: Garden beds right next to house footings 5Aug 05, 2008 12:38 pm Yes thats how they work.
However, if you have no real desire to keep the garden bed, then I'd dig it up and either lay a concrete/brick/paver path, slanted (slightly) away from the house. Building in manor lakes 2008 Re: Garden beds right next to house footings 7Aug 07, 2008 12:10 am There is an emerging style of landscaping that involves creating waterways in the gardens. these will only come to life when it rains. Like dry creeks. They channel storm water from down pipes, and wet low areas into central catchments. From there it drains away into the storm water system.
Maybe that is an idea for you? Make it into a pebbley creek bed with a good runn off for accumulated moisture? i imagine you also have another contract with an architect? and yeah, whatever other's said about special conditions and appendices 16 11143 Hi all I am looking to run a water line under my concrete footpath which is directly next to my home, was seeing if this is possible without cutting the entire section… 0 15270 Did you know that you can get rugs made from carpet?
