After some suggestions. Think of it as a test of your arborial knowledge! Here is the location: - garden bed 7m long, 1.5m wide (wider is possible) -westerley aspect -backs onto side of a zincalum shed - frost in winter, blisteringly hot in summer (beautiful inbetween, lol!) -tank water only available - min desired height 2m, up to say 4 or so m. - Hunter Valley NSW My thoughts: - some sort of citrus - sasanqua cameillas - some sort of cypress - murraya Am leaning towards cypress. Any suggestions welcomed!!! Re: Suitable Plant Suggestions Pls 2Jul 30, 2008 8:33 pm camellias need some sun shelter at certain times of the day at the very least. . citrus might be best Re: Suitable Plant Suggestions Pls 3Jul 31, 2008 12:45 am Vibernum Tinus. #1
They will grow in the worst soil (including road base, I've seen it) with out much water and all you will need to do is swear at them when you clip them to keep them to desired width. No citrus leaf miner probs either. Hardly the nutrient requirement of citrus (better for the environment) and faster growing. Lovley flowers and readily available from nurseries . Vibernam odoratisima is another good grower with bigger leaves but they smell a bit. look great though Murraya are wonderful, but I feel they may need more water than the tank will allow (however you do get more summer rain than us sandgropers) to get them looking good. The other I would suggest is Hibiscus Tilleaceous (rubra if possible). fast grower that loves to be hedged with good results visually. Magnolia Kay Paris would also make a wonderful hedge. Keep an eye out for this one. Almost the same looking as Little Gem yet is faster growing ad had more fragrent flowers... mmmmm They make great hedges as well as small feature trees Agonis flex. jervis bay after dark. Another small specimen tree but also does up as a wonderful hedge. Fast growing, has colour, and is easy to find. I don't often recomend conifers like Cupressus varieties as they are susseptible to various canker diseases. You may just grow it to where you want only to have branches die off one by one Not sure thoiugh if those diseases are active in the wonderful Hunter? Like our Jarrah die-back but for conifers Grevillea Oliveacea varieties. Fast growers that will attract birds to the garden by giving them shelter to dart in and out of. great flowers too that they will just love. all of these will handle the conditions you have described. If I think of more I'll let you know Re: Suitable Plant Suggestions Pls 4Jul 31, 2008 7:10 am Thnaks, FM, A couple there I'm not familiar with, so will research more.
Agree about the conifers. Really puts a damper on the overall uniformity when that happens. The garden bed is about 30m from our (soon to be) front door. Looking at 'gaps' where branches may have died isn't something I want. What exactly is the odoratismia's smell like? I work in a vet practice, & I can tell you there are many an unpleasant odour to be had there.....lol! Re: Suitable Plant Suggestions Pls 5Jul 31, 2008 8:54 pm well it smells like dog poo.
No it smells like ... ummm... you know what I can't describe it. It isn't quite overpowering but noticable, Hits you at the back of the nose if that is a description. It smells a little like plants in the solanacea family like potato vines or deadly night shade. looks awsome though. However if you rub dog poo on it it will smell nicer no no it smells better than dog poo. but cat poo? um Re: Suitable Plant Suggestions Pls 6Aug 01, 2008 7:44 am Believe me, FM, there is nothing I have encountered that smells worse than cat poo...... Not recommended! The image presented is for a sublevel area. The footings are down deep with a load bearing wall supporting the upper floor level.
