Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 08, 2016 11:03 am Hi All, I am in the process of building a new house in an established area of Melbourne. The block is also quite established in terms of trees etc. I am still in the design stage but part of the process with council is that landscape plans/designs need to be created before final sign off to remove a couple of trees can be given. For the most part the landscape design is fairly sorted, still working on the full planting schedule for the main areas but I'm looking for some ideas/inspiration on how to utilize the side are of my land. Here's some info: Eastern side of house Between 5 and 7 meters between house and side fence 3 meter easement on the entire eastern boundary (but I'm happy to plant over it) Main garden/lawn area is on southern boundary There is a north to south slope on the block that drops about 1.5 meters over the length of the area This will be a family house with kids and a dog. I have a 5m minimum setback from this boundary I guess because it is such a decent size, I don't want to just relegate it to being a forgotten space. I did have thoughts of laying a strip of turf a few meters wide and having it as another lawn area, especially for the dog to run. Another option was I could have some fruit trees in a corner and some parts a mini orchard. I would love any more ideas from anyone and have attached some pics so you can see what I mean (area in yellow) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thanks, Phil Re: Ideas on utilising the side of my house/land 2Feb 18, 2016 1:14 pm Hi Phil, I really like the look of your block with lots of established trees - will be interested to see the build progress. With respect to your question, I'd be tempted to put a few trees (whether they be fruit trees or something else) down that side of your house to give you a bit of screening from the neighbours and also to give you something nice to look out on from your bedroom windows. My block is much smaller than yours and I've managed to put in an orange tree, 2 lemons, a lime, 2 plums, an apple and a pear all in quite a small space. Don't forget that some fruit trees will need cross-pollinators though Good luck Re: Ideas on utilising the side of my house/land 3Feb 18, 2016 4:07 pm Thanks for your reply Grom, glad to have at least someone else's input It certainly is a nice block, albeit with a lot of challenges. I guess that's the price you pay when you find vacant land in 30 year old suburbia. Good idea with the mini orchid, I had thought of perhaps putting a lemon tree out there (we have a great one now so would miss it when we move) But perhaps I could take it further with a variety of trees. Even if they don't do that well with fruit they will always provide foliage, screening and generaly fill in the area. Thanks again and still open to any further ideas. I'm meeting with a Horticulturist/landscape designer this weekend so will see what they come up with.
