I was actually looking for info regarding the height of my lawn. My old man thinks it's too spongy. I will post a pic and look forward to your responses. I am in Perth (Kingsley). Have just turned the sprinklers back on. I was concerned that it needed de thatching. Any advice on that? Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Concerns? 23Oct 26, 2016 9:49 pm Whilst the grass doesn't look 100% I'd definitely say it's settled and taken well now. I've read that zoysia doesn't suffer from thatch ( or rather low thatch ) as it's a different grass to buffalo or kikuyu. Rather, It's spread is through underground runners and deep roots. If your concerned about it being spongy, try a shallow top dressing of soil... Being in Perth, I'd suggest a fine organic mix rather than more sand. I certainly wouldn't be raking the hell out of it as regular mowing will remove most of the dry dead material caught in the root zone. Besides, it's probably a good thing that the grass has a little protection over the warm dry weather anyway. Have you tested the pH of the soil? a simple pH imbalance can make the most bullet proof weeds even struggle. Depending on the pH, you can incorporate your organic buffers whilst you top dress. Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Concerns? 25Oct 27, 2016 8:04 pm For less than $20 you can get a pH test kit for soil from bunnings. It's good to check as pH can have massive effects on plants. Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Can you provide any thoughts on the height? Should it be cut lower? Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help? Concerns? 27Nov 01, 2016 11:08 am According to ozbreed who culture the zoysia breeds, and their documented care approach is to water only when needed, fertilise sparingly, and mow infrequently. All of which suggest that the grass need not be dethatched. Specifically they mention for a low maintenance approach, leave the grass to 75mm-90mm, then cut to 40-50mm. However, I'd definitely look into pros and cons of the watering and fertilising regime for this grass via the web site. Ultimately you may choose to do more, to get the manicured effect that you see on golf courses. Empireturf.com.au > care & installation. Re: Lawn thoughts Empire Zoysia - Help?
