Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 30, 2015 10:20 am I would like to plant two fan palms in pots in my backyard but I'm not sure which type would be best as there are a few different types and where I live we get quite bad frosts in winter so I need a hardy type that can handle being out in the weather in a cold climate part of the year, does anyone know which type of fan palms would be best suited for me? Re: Fan palms 3Dec 05, 2015 11:02 am Your best bet after your online research of course is a visit to your local nursery. I'm sure they would have experience or at least point you in the right direction. Any of the fan palms I've seen have been in a warm temperate to semi-tropical environment. I'm not sure how they would go in your local climate. Are there any other types that you could maybe use instead? Stewie Re: Fan palms 4Dec 05, 2015 11:24 am Thanks for the advice, stewie. I might do that as I will need to buy the palm tree`s from a nursery anyway so I may aswell ask their advice while I'm there. There aren't really any other palms I could use as I like the look of fan palms and I`ve got other types of palms in pots under my pergola but they cant handle being out in the open so I don't want more of that type for this particular spot. Thanks for the reply Re: Fan palms 5Dec 05, 2015 3:25 pm One in that family that may be OK is the Cabbage Tree Palm although it can get to a fair height. My parents had a few clumps of them growing on their acreage back in NZ and we used to get some pretty harsh frosts there. In a pot I'd assume that they would be restricted in size. Stewie Re: Fan palms 6Dec 07, 2015 9:58 am Thanks stewie I will look into those but I think I'm leaning more towards the windmill palm as they have a type of trunk that insulates the plant in cold weather and makes it more hardy and I prefer the look of them My home office is hot with computer equipment running virtually 18 hours a day. When it gets unbearably warm I simply step out of my door into the living area which is… 0 5193 Any electricians here please help. 1) Will the Fan need separate switch to ON/OFF/Speed eventhough it comes with Remote 2) how about… 0 1251 |
