Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 30, 2015 12:11 pm Hi all, I have bought a house with some onion weed in the back yard. after all the rain in Sydney, the lawn and onion weed in it is going crazy. So I was hoping to not only do a mowing session this long weekend but also deal with the onion weed. any tips or success stories on eradication as I have heard it is very hard to get rid off once it has appeared. thanks! Re: Onion Weed - Help! how do you get rid of it... 2Sep 30, 2015 7:38 pm Ahh yes, onion grass. Chooks love the bulbs! Get it out before it flowers!!
1. Sadly, you can't eradicate onion grass with weed killers. That type of foliage doesn't absorb it. 2. Digging it up bulb by bulb is the only sure fire method to get rid of it. The bulbs are rooted down surprisingly deep. I used a type of digging fork to hook the bulb up and out. 3. If you try just pulling it out, you will usually only break the leaves off the bulb. This actually weakens the bulb in time, but of course you still need to get rid of the bulb. After heavy rain is better. But still some need digging out. 4. You need to smash the bulbs to pulp if you want to throw them in the compost. If not, throw them into the garbage bin. 5. Mulching your garden beds helps pull any onion grass up more easily, sometimes without digging. Re: Onion Weed - Help! how do you get rid of it... 3Oct 13, 2015 4:57 pm thanks for the tips. I've been busy weeding and yes, the bulbs are quite deep so it is a long process.... We were going after the arum lily firstly, but it killed the onion weed as well as a bonus. The bulbs stay alive in the ground for many many years sometimes up to 10 years. They will suddenly reappear at some stage any kind of weed killer will not kill them as the bulbs in the ground remains unharmed. Best way to remove is after extreme heavy rain try to gather all the weed in your hand and genyl pull up from moist soil hoping to catch the bulb be very careful as the main bulb when pulled can spread 50 or so microscopic baby bulbs you will not see when pulling so have a cover when pulling from the lawn and empty it all into the bin without contaminating the lawn further. I have battled this weed for months its a very hard one to combat but the best time to attack is when the soil is very moist which is also when this weed thrives the most. NEVER LET IT FLOWER OR YOU WILL BE IN MAJOR TROUBLE Re: Onion Weed - Help! how do you get rid of it... 6Feb 18, 2016 9:14 am Forget just pulling it out if it is a reasonably adult onion weed. The only way to get the main bulb plus all the smaller ones is to dig it out with a small implement like a 3" hand spade and dump both the onion weed and the soil taking care not to dislodge the bulbs. Been there done that many times ! Then you have to fill all the holes left behind. Best time to tackle it is after extreme rainfall I find you can pull them up sometimes with the bulb still attached as the soil is waterlogged and not dry. Its a bugger constant persistence any you may eventually get there. Hi all, has anyone been ask to do the weeds in their property while in the middle of build?
