Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 28, 2015 10:13 am Hi, Our 6 month old lawn has been attacked by a weed (could be winter grass) recently. The weeds have started off with 4-10 shoots per week and as they weather warmed up, they progressed to hundreds or may be thousands now as shown in the imaged attached. It may not be practical to pull them off manually anymore. We have used Amgrow's winter grass killer as per their instructions twice over the last one month, but it has not made any difference at all. Can someone please advice how to get rid of this weed? There are 2 ways to tackle it. 1. Do nothing, poa (winter grass) dies off mid spring once it warms up and the soil dries out. You manage it by mowing.. but it can leave the dormant grass a bit patchy when it dies out until the main grass starts growing again filling in any gaps. The poa will be gone once the grass starts growing quick. 2. Apply amgrow winter grass killer more often. It definately works and you should see the affected poa yellowing as it dies off. Poa grows very rapidly so even if you think you sprayed it all, new growth shoots up replacing the dead plants making it seem like the spray doesn't work. So you have to be vigilant. Re: Winter Grass Removal 3Sep 29, 2015 8:20 am Thanks BeatrixKiddo I will start spraying amgrow winter grass killer again this week. Our whole neighborhood is all full of winter grass now. Is this specific to some areas like where we live or is this a common problem around Melbourne? A colleague has suggested to use weed and feed to treat winter grass. Do you recommend that product as well for our Couch lawn? Re: Winter Grass Removal 4Sep 29, 2015 10:01 pm Winter grass is a common problem everywhere. Most lawns you see driving along are kikuyu, poa and kik are similar colours so it far less noticeable. You only really see poa when there is a dormant grass with browny green leaves like couch or buffalo. No the weed and feed won't work as it targets broadleaf weeds like clover.. There are other options you can read about here; http://www.indmowing.com.au/poa-annua.htm Note Amgow winter grass killer has the same active ingredient (endothal) as 'poa check' mentioned in the link.
