Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 27, 2015 5:22 pm I'm pre planning our verandah, and need to know about verandah posts and retaining walls. Can I put verandah posts just behind a retaining wall? And as I'm not sure how far down the normal ground level is, what footing requirements would I need to look at? Is it possible/allowed/recommended to use the verandah posts as the retaining wall posts? The retaining wall is about 800mm high. Thanks! Tony Re: Verandah post in/part of retaining wall. 2Sep 30, 2015 10:35 am Ideally you would want to keep the retainer wall post away from the verandah post but not much. There should not be too much effect on each other due to the footings being roughly at the same depth of about 800mm give or take. This should negate the concept of "angle of repose". Otherwise you would need to check what the regs are for the verandah post but for the retainer wall post it's what ever the height of the retainer wall is it should go down as far. Eg. 800mm above ground should have a hole 800mm below ground. As for using a structural verandah post as a retainer wall post, very bad idea. The retainer wall will move (how much is the question) and you down want your verandah to go with it. Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
