I know what we are planning to do (roughly) but it is hard to give any ideas unless you can tell us what you want out of this space.... Entertaining area? Play area for kids? Grass? No grass? Shed? Where is/where do you want the clothesline? Are you going to deck the alfresco area? Do you want a separate BBQ area? Is one side of the house going to be your main walk through side (from the front)? etc. How big is the actual back yard from the back wall of the house (metres to the fence)? Have you looked at display homes and what they have done with the yards? Do you like anything you have seen at any of these that you could be inspired by? As I said our layout is similar to yours. If you are interested in what we are thinking.... we have decided to have one side of our house as the 'dead side'. This is the side opposite to where the alfresco is. It will be the side you don't really go down - it will be where the clothesline will go, where the bins will go, etc. We will probably just concrete this side - easy to keep clean. Our laundry door leads to this side of hte house, which will work well. This is also the side that has a back door to the garage. The other side there will be a side gate and we will have a path from the front to the back, to the alfresco area. Probably a garden bed all the way down along the path/ fence. The alfresco area will be decked and then you will step down onto paving (which the side path will lead to). There will be a small-ish paved area (3m x 4m) in front of the deck which will lead to an undercover BBQ area which will also be paved (I want to keep the BBQ and the smoke from it away from the house). We will have a shed behind the BBQ area. We actuallly have quite a big backyard, which is why this is possible. The other half of the back will be grassed and garden beds around the perimeter. Anyway, if you can answer some of the questions that would be great as we could maybe offer some options? My blog: tashandpaul.wordpress.com Re: Please help with landscaping ideas 3Sep 06, 2015 7:56 pm Im really keen to follow this thread as our land is nearly the same size at 534m2 & will be left in a similar state to your block. Our land slopes slightly from back to front & right to left 500mm. Our builder will not be cutting all the way to the boundary, instead leaving ours like yours with battering up to the fence line. Iām assuming due to cut a of 600mm on the right side we'll need a retaining wall in the back right hand corner off the alfresco, and the left front corner near our garage will be filled 400mm, our plans state that we will most likely need to have a small retaining wall there as well. We plan on having stepping stones and rocks all the way around the house, not sure how wide but no more than 1m out from the house. Then up one side and across the back fence, to have a row of plants, possibly lilly pillys or similar along the fence & then a hedge between that & the path. The left hand side, the 'dead side' will be 1m off the boundary. we're having an external garage door on that side and plan to use that area for our Labradors to have a dog run down to the back yard, with a separate fenced in area at the back with a kennel and shade. Having stepping stones & rocks up to a grassy area will keep the area mud free & easy to maintain..ie no digging areas for the young Labby. The alfresco's on that side, it'll be tiles over concrete slab, so we don't want to step down straight on to wet grass in winter, as we can't afford to pave the whole area. I'd love to have something similar to this... Re: Please help with landscaping ideas 5Sep 16, 2015 8:12 pm We do a lot of landscape designs for new builds like yours. Tashpaul is exactly right, you need to work out the main functions of your garden and then work the design around the functions - eg kids play, entertainment, display garden, quiet retreat. Of course you can achieve several objectives in the garden. A few other points to consider - privacy from neighbours, shadowing, seasonal plant displays, visual features and creating views from windows and doors. I recently finished my house and after landscaping, have begun to plan a fence. To be honest its been a bit of an afterthought so I'm after some much needed advice.
