Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 15, 2015 12:06 pm Im working on part of my side garden that currently has nothing in it and I`ve already bought three little gem magnolia tree`s to go in a row in the spot but I need plants to go underneath them and as a border along side a path. I was thinking of planting liriope but I`ve read that they can get to 60cm tall and I want something that gets to about half that height and no taller. I`d prefer something low maintenance and strappy leafed and also something that compliments the magnolia trees, any ideas are appreciated Re: Strappy leaf plants to compliment magnolia tree`s 2Jun 19, 2015 3:04 pm What about Cordyline Electric Pink or Pink Sensation - awesome feature foliage colour.. Reckon its a good choice if it is not too smashed by sun in summer. They grow well under competition from tree roots and shading. Re: Strappy leaf plants to compliment magnolia tree`s 4Jun 19, 2015 8:21 pm Thanks for your suggestion Pungentia , the pink cordylines are quite nice but i was looking for something less colourful because the garden bed is next to my house and my house is already quite colourful with red bricks and dark blue doors and window frames and because of this i try to keep the garden all green without many bright colours to balance it out and the bright pink would stand out quite a lot. BeatrixKiddo I'd actually thought about the royal purple liriope and i quite like them but i read on one internet site that they grow quite big like the other liriope but i think that might`ve been wrong because I haven't seen that on any other site about them. I think the purple liriope might look good in the spot so i`ll research it a bit more, thanks for your help guys Re: Strappy leaf plants to compliment magnolia tree`s 5Nov 01, 2015 7:35 pm Have a look at Sweet Mist... Grows to about 30cm, and is a darker burgundy foliage... Although If it looks too bare I might plant some succulents there because they are low maintenance and tough Re: Strappy leaf plants to compliment magnolia tree`s 7Mar 04, 2016 10:58 pm If you change your mind perhaps consider black mondo grass. Grows to a maximum of 20cm and they would look great with the Little Gems. http://www.thetutuguru.com.au/shop/black-mondo-grass/ Custom downslope build Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61873 Blog http://www.buildingroyalmanor.blogspot.com.au Hi , I'm currently going through this now within the Whitehorse council which has a similar set of restrictions.
