Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 08, 2015 7:28 pm Hi, I've got a lemon, a line and a cumquat which are not doing too , not much new growth for a while now and the leaves are very pale green. At the local nursery they said it's because I use drip irrigation to water them and I need to feed them more. They offered synthetic fertiliser but I declined, I want to try without. What are my watering options? Is drip irrigation really not good for them? The challenge is that it's a rather windy spot and the other plants nearby are very suited for a dripper system. Or can I mix it with some sprinklers? The other question have is about feeding them. What should feed them with (other than molasses) and how do set that up to work with my drippers? Appreciate any help to give my trees a better life Re: Watering and feeding citrus 2Jun 08, 2015 10:48 pm I'm not a nurseryman or botanist but just about every article I've read on citrus says that they are both thirsty and hungry so I'd give them lots of both. Dig down four or more inches into the soil around the base of the tree, not just next to the trunk but out about halfway to the drip line. It shouldn't be dry but moist ( it shouldn't be wet either ). Maybe your dripline isn't letting enough water down to the roots. As for fertiliser - I've been giving ours dry blood 'n bone dug in a few inches and sometimes Seasol in a watering can about every few months or so. What was your soil prep like for these trees and is it free draining soil ? Stewie Re: Watering and feeding citrus 3Jun 09, 2015 7:35 pm For soil prep I mixed some putting mix and blood n bone with sand and put that below and around. I've given them seasol and seamungus few times before it rained but that might not be enough. Heard that sheep manure is good for . Do you know if there's sprinkler or a spray which could suit? Watering time is around 30-40 minutes and there's plenty of mulch on the ground, except around the trunk. I'm just concerned not much water would actually get into the soil with spray. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Building with Redink in Madeley WA Photos: http://s1244.photobucket.com/user/takat ... yHouse2012 Moved in 01/06/2013 Next project: Lanscaping Re: Watering and feeding citrus 4Jun 09, 2015 10:23 pm Personally I prefer watering by hand with a hose and after a shrub is established I generally don't water them much except for during prolonged dry spells. Citrus are probably the only ones that I apply more water to. I don't know much about sprays or sprinkler systems.
