Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 10, 2015 9:53 pm Howdy Just have a question. Our slab is H1 class so the soil has obviously got lots of clay in it, though the slab is quite high off the ground in most places on average the top soil will need to be say 100mm give or take to raise everything up with paths and doors etc. What's the best type of top soil, something like an organic or sandy mix top soil. One person I got quotes from said the sandy soil was popular amongst people laying turf. Because we'll need a bit of soil over the top is it worth dressing the clay with gypsum. (Not sure what it is just seen it thrown around in threads for clay based soils). Or will that much top soil be fine and the clay not effect it. I don't want to spend all this money on soils and grass only for the clay to ruin it all, etc etc. Any help is appreciated Thanks Clay, top soil and grass 5May 30, 2015 7:13 pm Gypsum breaks up clay so I would be putting it down. Clay is one of the most nutrient rich soils so don't think it should be avoided. It should be improved. Hire a commercial grade rotary hoe and hoe in the sandy soil gypsum and some organic matter. It will make a fantastic soil. You can then top it off with some of the sandier stuff and level it out and lay your turf. Encourage the grass to drive its roots deep and into the improved clay and your lawn will be the envy of many. Re: Clay, top soil and grass 6May 30, 2015 11:43 pm If I layed it and then soil went over the top without mixing would that basically do nothing. I'm out of time for mixing it in unfortunately, I have soil going to be delivered on Monday for the builder to spread around with a bobcat. How do you lay it, thick or just lightly Re: Clay, top soil and grass 9May 31, 2015 10:28 am Read FuManchus guide to turf... viewtopic.php?f=19&t=43570 Also a couple of others of a similar note viewtopic.php?f=19&t=77567 viewtopic.php?f=19&t=77615 Stewie Re: Clay, top soil and grass 10Dec 17, 2015 7:07 am Just a question that I'm pretty sure I know the answer to but thought I would check. With weeds on an unprepped block (for turf that is) would you have to poison/kill all the weeds before laying fill and top soil and turf? I would assume yes but want to double check. Also with the poison staying in the soil Re: Clay, top soil and grass 11Dec 17, 2015 7:25 am Nic and Shell 1 Just a question that I'm pretty sure I know the answer to but thought I would check. Also with the poison staying in the soil If you have heaps, then yes. You should do it twice just to make sure. Although I wonder weather a thick turf would establish enough before the weeds started to push through. I wondered that too covered in spoiled and turf no sunlight etc only the stronger ones would push through I've dug some footings to embed a post anchor into.
