Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 03, 2015 1:41 pm Hi, We're planning on building a single storey as a Kdr. We'll only be 90cm from each side boundary. We need a wooden retaining wall on each side next to the existing fences and for more than the length of the new house- so about 30-35m in total. One wall has to be max 350mm and one Max 800mm. I'm concerned there won't be much access to do this after the build. The builder says we can do it after they handover- is that correct?? Does the council then check we have done the walls?? We are doing cdc in Nsw. We are only in tender stage now- so the walls are specified on the plans. Who Decides that the walls are built to a correct standard? Does anyone have rough estimates of costs for these walls? However, do a search of your councils website to see what's stipulated in the development controls for your shire area. A call to the council might be a faster way to get some guidance on your questions regarding inspections etc. Before the build option - As you suggest, building the walls before the build will be easier for access. If you chose to go this route then make sure you communicate with your builder and agree on all of the wall particulars, height, locations, lengths etc. before you build them. The builder will probably want to move along quickly once the block is cut which will most likely rule out the plod along DIYer method so you will have to fork out for professionals to build the walls. The other option is to build the walls after handover. Are you a DIYer? If you are then you could save yourself a considerable amount of money by doing it yourself. You've said you want to build wooden retaining wall next to existing fences. I did exactly this (on one side of my KDR post handover) check out page 2 of my thread showing pics of what I did. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=44663&start=20 Hope this helps. Re: Retaining walls on new build- Kdr cdc Nsw sydney 6Jul 23, 2015 12:25 am Hi Knockitdown- thank you very much for your extensive post. I read your thread- amazing work you did with your landscaping. The side retaining wall is what we'd want. I spoke to a guy in a new build - across from our preschool- who had a retaining wall like yours- t definitely seems doable by Us and several helpers. Since I posted- we've had some more thorough advice from the builder. So we're a bit clearer on all that. I was relieved to hear that they don't cut right next to the fence but cut a little bit away from the fence- which helped stop me worrying about the soil being washed away, before the retaining wall was in. I think we'll be diy plodders, so won't do it till after. I also took inspiration from your garden bed- we have bush rock on existing beds. It might be too much effort to save though. But, your advice has helped greatly too. Re: Retaining walls on new build- Kdr cdc Nsw sydney 7Jul 23, 2015 6:47 am In our case the builder has us asked to remove fence with neighbours while they build the garage area and that is where the retaining wall going to come. I would imagine we will have to do work after the builder has completed garage side area. 23/06/2014 - Paid deposit 21/07/2014 - ordered the survey and tender 13/08/2014 - soils test sample taken 14/08/2014 - survey done today 30/08/2014 - Pre-color consultant aptmnt Re: Retaining walls on new build- Kdr cdc Nsw sydney 8Jul 25, 2015 6:12 pm No probs Zarinafly, I'm glad my post was helpful. Hi All, see above image. The required setback from the rear boundary in my case is 5m, as you can see the shape of the site and location of the boundary is slightly… 0 8463 you need to make an application to your local council for this as they are the approval authority for driveways cheers Simeon 1 7098 |
