Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 19, 2015 10:45 am I need to choose a plant to go in my front garden and need suggestions because I have a lot of requirements and cant think of a suitable plant . The areas I need to fill are at the front of my house infront of the windows along the side of the front path to the door. The spots get full sun most of the day and face north, my front windows go down to about 15 cm above the garden bed so I`d like something that stays quite low, I`d also like something that doesn't need too much maintenance and stays looking good. The garden beds are each about 3 metres across and 30 cm wide. I used to have blue fescue grass plants in these garden beds but they started to look a bit ratty and had lots of dead bits and after a couple of years of having them I was a bit bored with how they looked and wanted a change. I live in ballarat in Victoria so the plants I plant need to be frost tolerant because we get quite cold frosty winters. Ive considered planting dwarf mondo grass but I`ve heard that they need a shadier spot and mine has no shade most of the day. Any suggestions would help Re: Need help choosing plants for front garden 2Mar 27, 2015 11:58 am Hi Alex, Posting a pic of the garden bed in question might get you a few more replies. If you want a grass you could try something like a lomandra? (there are tons of different varieties) Some of them flower but they are not all that "interesting" IMHO. I would think you might like to plant something which would grow a bit taller than the bottom of the windows in order to give your house some shade/protection from the northerly sun? Most Australian natives are going to meet your requirements of hardiness and frost tolerance. Hope that helps. Re: Need help choosing plants for front garden 3Mar 27, 2015 12:33 pm Thanks for the reply grom40, I would post a picture of the area but the photo sharing site I used to use to post pictures on here now requires a paid membership to post photos on there and I don't really want to pay for it because I wouldn't use it much. I have about 30 lomandra tanikas around my front garden as borders already and I have those opposite the garden beds Im looking for a plant for also so I was looking for something that looks different to give a bit of contrast to the grass plants. I actually like getting the sun in those windows during the day because my house can get a bit dark so im not looking to cover them up if I can avoid it haha . I`ll look up some natives and see if any suit what I want, thanks for your help Re: Need help choosing plants for front garden 4Mar 27, 2015 1:47 pm Try imgur for photos sharing... I dug out the garden beds and planted the succulents lower than I was originally going to so that when they grow and bush up they wont go above the window height. I know that they can go a bit crazy and grow out of their space so I will keep them trimmed and confined to the garden bed spaces. Thanks again for the help and suggestions Murraya could be a great option for you. It creates a great tall screening hedge but doesn't drop fruit like lily pilly. The flowers smell divine. 2 10247 Thanks for the reply.
